About Jacob Burns Indie Film Fanatics

The JB Indie Film Fanatics is an eclectic group of local movie aficionados who enjoy seeing challenging cinema at the JBFC, and our purpose is to view only the most unusual (and sometimes controversial) films being shown. Usually these are films we know little if anything about before we attend. In other words: standard Hollywood fare is avoided at all costs.

Typically, the group schedules a film outing on a weekday night (Monday or Tuesday mostly) for movies that start around 7pm; however, we always first meetup in the Burns lobby (near the membership desk) at least 15 minutes before the movie begins. If you arrive late, no worries, just look for a familiar face in one of the last rows where we usually sit. NOTE: I highly recommend that you purchase your ticket online before the event. Too many times I've been told members were Sold Out to events with speakers or films that screen in the smaller theaters.

Of course, one of the key reasons for joining this group is to also meetup afterwards and discuss the film we've just seen. Usually we'll walk across the street to get a drink or a snack and then dig into the nitty-gritty of the film, or any other pressing worldy events.

Members are encouraged to regularly check out our Events section, as well as the JBFC web site (http://www.burnsfilmc..., and RSVP if you see a flick you're interested in attending, or contact the Organizer about a specific film and they'll post it as an Event.

We look forward to seeing you at the Burns.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Free Tickets

 How does free or complimentary ticketing work?

Free tickets are periodically offered to the JBFF group from the Jacob Burns Film Center (JBFC) -- soley at their discretion. In other words, the JBFF Organizers (Kevin, Cathy and Katie) have no way of knowing in advance when or for what film we will be offered free tickets.

Members must FIRST sign up for the particular event at the JBFF Meetup site in order to be eligible for free tickets. (Do not email an Organizer saying they want to attend a free event; those emails will be deleted.) However, when the event fills up or the sign-up date passes, the Organizer will send out a final email asking for both your first and last name for the JBFC Guest List.

All free events are on a first come, first serve basis since there are always a limited number of tickets.

If you have purchased a ticket to the event before we make an announcement of free tickets, we will not be able to get you a ticket refund. We are not employees of JBFC and have no influence in that regard. Please do not ask us. The Organizers have also sometimes purchased tickets to an event before the group was offered free tickets.

When the Jacob Burns Film Fanatics group is offered free tickets, one of the Organizers posts the offering on the JBFF Meetup website and may email the entire group. At the discretion of the Organizer, the free tickets are offered either only to members of JBFF or to members and guests of the members. The Organizer can also limit the number of guests so that more members have the opportunity to sign up.

If your plans do change and you can?t attend the event, please update your response as soon as possible so that another member will have the opportunity for a free ticket.

IMPORTANT: The JBFC always requests the first and last names of people getting free tickets. This is their policy, not ours. The Organizer sets a cut off date for members to comply with this request. If a member does not send an email to the Organizer of the event, then that member?s name will be taken off the list and tickets will be offered to another member.

NOTE: Since the group is very large and there are many of you who either do not have a picture, do not use your last name or do not use names at all (use of an alias and an avatar makes it hard to know who you are), the Organizers do not keep a list of first and last names from event to event. Therefore, once the guest list is set the Event Organizer email you requesting your full name each and every time there is a free event.

Please always look at the event to see who is organizing it. Do not email the wrong Organizer.

While we understand that there are unavoidable emergencies, if you sign up for a free event and do not show up or cancel at the last minute, at the Organizer?s discretion we may delete your name from future free events. The JBFC has been very generous to our group. They would certainly have the right to refuse us free tickets in the future if they see that people are signing up and not showing up. Free tickets are a gift not a right and it is not fair to other members if you sign up and then do not show up or cancel at the last minute.

Movie Events in General

How do I find the group?

The Organizer will list in the event announcement if there is a place to meet before the movie. Usually, but not always, this is by the Membership Desk in the Lobby for approximately 10-15 minutes prior to the movie.

It would be helpful if you look at the Organizers? pictures in order to recognize us and the group. Please introduce yourself to one of us. We are a very friendly group but we can?t read your mind to know who you are or whether you are a member of the group. It would also be very helpful if you posted your picture on your profile.

After the movie the group usually meets in the lobby by or near the front doors or just outside of the theaters where the movie was shown.

If the movie is popular or if you arrive at the theater late, please just find a seat in the theater. We can not always save seats.

Does the group go out after the movie?

In most cases, yes. This is a very enjoyable part of the group. Sometimes if the movie runs very late, the group may choose to just hang out in the Lobby for a while (as long as the JBFC does?t throw us out).

If the group goes out, how do we split the bill?

We have been using the 30% rule and it has worked out well. It goes something like this:

You order $10 worth of food and drink, you add 30% ($3.00) of that to your food total to cover tax and tips. We understand that results in a large tip, but since we are usually a large group and go to the same places over and over, it pays for us to be generous to the wait staff. Most places will refuse separate checks if there is a large group. . We ask that you abide by the 30% rule. Also, using the 30% rule makes it easier for each member to figure out their portion of the bill so that we can settle it efficiently.

Please understand that if we go to a restaurant or diner, there is usually a minimum. The Pleasantville diner has asked us to spend at least $3 per person (and yes, you would add $.90 for the tax and tip). Please do not just order a glass of water.

We have had a very pleasant experience organizing this group and have met some wonderful, interesting people. We hope that you enjoy the movies we select, your fellow Jacob Burns Film Fanatics and the conversations that result from the mixture of an interesting film and the lively group that comes to each film.
Please join us.

See you at the Burns, your Organizers: Kevin, Cathy and Katie
