The Third Man

Sun, August 30 at 5:00 pm

From its opening at a funeral to its ending at another funeral—for the same person!—The Third Man paints a haunting portrait of sectioned-off, postwar Vienna. An American writer (Joseph Cotton) searches the city’s ravaged streets and cavernous underground sewers for answers to the questions surrounding the mysterious death of his friend Harry Lime (Orson Welles, in possibly his most popular role). Complemented by Anton Karas’ unique zither score. Carol Reed. 1949. 104 m. NR. UK. Rialto Pictures.

Q&A Terrence Rafferty is a frequent contributor to the New York Times. He was the film critic of The Nation, the critic-at-large of GQ, and, for ten years, a staff writer at The New Yorker.

I will meet you prior to the movie at the Membership Desk. Look at my picture, come up and introduce yourself. I will be at the Membership Desk from 4:30 to 4:55. The Movie starts at 5:00 pm. If you are receiving a free ticket you need to be there by 4:45

    •  Terrific movie! Sorry I had to run...
    •  This was a fun evening, thank you!
    •  Enjoyed the movie and the speaker Mr. Rafferty offered some fun/interesting background. Sorry I couldn't stay for the group get together after. If anyone is interested, and you haven't already looked it up yourself, the narrator at the opening was the director Carol Reed (and in the American version Joseph Cotton was the opening narrator).
    •  Good movie. Seen it many times. Didn't stay for the discussion afterwards. Rafferty's introduction indicated that he is a better writer than speaker. Maybe next time.
