THE PROFOUND DESIRE OF THE GODS (aka Legends from a Southern Island)

*Sun. May 4 at 4:00

Shohei Imamura. 1968. 172 min. GP. Japan, in Japanese with subtitles. Nikkatsu/Japan Foundation.

While relatively unknown in the US, Shohei Imamura, the first Japanese director to win two Palme d'Or awards at Cannes, is regarded as one of the most important and outrageous filmmakers in Japanese cinema. Here he presents the story of a Tokyo engineer who arrives on a tropical island and comes face to face with a primitive culture governed by superstition and bizarre ritual.

Q&A w/host Jonathan Demme.

Very interesting movie that I would have never chosen if it was not for the meet up announcement and Cathy's kind help navigating the sign up.
    •  Thought it was great!

Unusual movie, the beginning was very strange, it did get more interesting as it progressed. Although it will not be on my favorite movie list, it was a topic of lively discussions at the diner. Good group last night.
    •  Incredible
    •  I'm really thinking that Demme's "rarely seen cinema" is rarely seen for a good reason. Ick.
    •  A perfect day at the movies with a lively snack afterward. AAA!
    •  This was fascinating. It offered a gambit of emotional reactions throughout the film and at times felt like a national geographic documentary.
    •  Great Q&A
    •  GREAT movie!
