SENKI (SHADOWS)
Macedonia/Germany/Italy/Bulgaria/Spain, 2007, Milcho Manchevski
The latest film from the director of Before the Rain is a sensuously photographed supernatural mystery-thriller in which a Macedonian (the country not the town) doctor who has survived a serious car crash starts encountering strange phenomena and weird people who seem to be telling him something (though in cryptic phrases or unfamiliar languages). Macedonia’s official entry for the 2008 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. “You won’t be bored…Well acted and very sexy.” –The NY Times. Cleveland premiere. Subtitles. 35mm. 130 min. Adults only! There is nudity, but as far as I can tell, it is done in a tasteful manner, bj.

DESCRIPTION
“SHADOWS is a film about sex and death, and a few important things in between. It is an old-fashioned, slow-burn of a film. SHADOWS is in many ways my most personal film to date, a story of what happens if lady Macbeth had lived today and survived to have a grown-up son. This man, Lazar, would try to come to terms with her overbearing presence and her transgressions of the past. It is scary, but it offers no cheap thrills, sound bites nor easy solutions. It is about a man trying to have a dialogue with the dead, and becoming more alive for that experience.” Milcho Manchevski, director
REVIEW
The film has premiered at several international film festivals, the first being the Toronto International Film Festival. The film was well received with one of the festival's film critics calling it "Manchevski’s most ambitious film to date". Other critics, such as Patrick McGavin of Screen Daily, called it “ambitious and capably mounted […] (Manchevski) retains a very fine eye for composition, aided by the sensuous, beautiful work of Italian cinematographer Fabio Cianchetti. The movie's standout quality is the sexy, revealing work of the vibrant, highly alluring young actress Vesna Stanojevska, a professional musician making her film debut. She injects the film with an erotic intensity”..
