SUMMARY:Cherry Blossoms: Cinematheque / Pacific East
DESCRIPTION:Cleveland Independent Movie Goers\n\nCherry Blossoms - Hanami\n
Germany\, 2009\, Doris Dörrie\n\nWinner of the Roxanne T. Mueller Award at
the 2009 Cleveland International Film Festival - Audience Choice Award for
Best Film at the festival.\n\nCHERRY BLOSSOMS is one of the most moving fil
ms you are ever likely to see. Directed by Doris Dörrie\, and winner of man
y awards\, it is a consistently surprising story of loss\, regret\, and reb
irth. Rudi and Trudi Angermeier are a long-married Bavarian couple. Rudi is
a gruff man who likes routine\, though some day he might visit his eldest
son in Tokyo. Trudi is a dedicated homemaker\, a sensitive woman who has al
ways wanted to visit Japan and explore her passion for Butoh dancing. When
she learns that her husband doesn’t have long to live\, Trudi decides not t
o tell him and instead persuades him to go on a trip with her. After a wren
ching visit with their grown children in Berlin\, who are too busy for them
\, they continue their holiday by the Baltic Sea. Unexpectedly\, it is Trud
i who dies\, overnight in the hotel. Overwhelmed by his loss\, and consumed
with regret that he kept his wife from her dream\, Rudi undertakes a journ
ey to Tokyo for her. As he experiences the beautiful transience of the cher
ry blossoms\, his friendship with a young Butoh dancer helps him to mourn a
nd celebrate his wife. (In English and German with English subtitles) \n\n

story I tried to investigate serious questions about life and death\, love
and loss in a lightfooted and hopefully lighthearted way: does impermanenc
e teach us to see things the way they really are? Is it possible to enjoy
the present moment in the face of death? What makes us blossom? What make
s us wither? How can we water our seeds of joy? We tried to apply these q
uestions not only to the story but also to our way of shooting. We tried t
o discover beauty in each moment and let it pervade the story. For all of
us\, this blend of reality and fiction was strangely exhilarating. It was
as if the line between waking and dreaming had been blurred and it wasn’t q
uite clear where we were\, but at all times we felt much closer to the esse
nce and I think this shows in the film.” Director Doris Dörrie.. \nhttp://
