The 31st annual Cleveland International Film Festival (CIFF) will be taking place March 15-25. It is an incredible treat that we have a festival noted by Time magazine as one of the top ten in the world. http://clevelandfilm.org/

This Meetup is the 1st of 3 events sponsored by CIMG. For any event, you may attend one or both movies.

1:45: MOVIE 1: I am guessing that tickets might be available last minute. Meet by the center of the Fountains on the side nearest to Tower Cinemas. At 1:55, we will be leaving to get in line for TAKING FATHER HOME. Afterwards, we will be waiting around the "Parking Validation" desk.

3:45: MOVIE 2: Film may go on standby by the first Saturday in the festival, but I am guessing you might get in if you wait. Meet by the entrance line for THE TRACKER. At 4:00, we will get in line for the movie. Afterwards, we will meet by the center of the Fountains on the side nearest to Tower Cinemas.

6:15 EATS AND DISCUSSION: From the Fountains, we will walk (all indoors) to the Muse. Dress is business casual. http://www.ritzcarlton.com/en/Properties/Cleveland/Dining/Muse/Default.htm

TAKING FATHER HOME DESCRIPTION: CHINA. Directed by Ying Liang. 100 minutes

With no money, one knife, two ducks, and a dream, stubborn teenager Xu Yun leaves his small village for the big city. There may be over three million in Zigong, but Xu is determined to find his father, who abandoned his family six years ago. Additional description: http://www.clevelandfilm.org/ciff_films_find.php?fid=2215

THE TRACKER DESCRIPTION: AUSTRALIA Directed by Rolf de Heer. 98 minutes

Four nameless men credited as The Tracker, The Fanatic, The Follower, and The Veteran traverse the Australian outback in search of a black fugitive accused of killing a white woman. Additional description: http://clevelandfilm.org/ciff_films_find.php?fid=2222

GETTING THERE: Parking is Free (with validation!), but it gets very crowded so allow plenty of time, especially on weekends. Consider taking RTA.

BUYING TICKETS: For most films, I recommend you buy tickets online ahead of time or at the festival. Some of the films sell out. Others go on standby, which means you will be admitted if there are seats available, but it requires more waiting. As a last resort, you could see another movie and meet us afterwards. http://clevelandfilm.org/

FINDING THE GROUP: If you don't find us ahead of time, plan to meet by the Fountains, on the side nearest to Tower Cinemas afterwards. I am often found wearing an Indian's cap.

OTHER MOVIES AT THE CIFF: I would encourage you to post other CIFF movies you may be attending so that others may be able to join you.

Lakeland CC has its own film festival. Come see Moolade for free. The full film schedule is at:
http://www.lakelandcc.edu/academic/faculty/santosr/film_past.asp

LCC is easy to find, just south off I-90. http://lakelandcc.edu/geneinfo/#areaMap

6:15 EATS: Panera is a mile north of I-90 at 306 and Mentor Ave. Look for the group at a nearby table. I will be wearing a red coat. Cash is recommended.

7:30 AUDITORIUM H-101: Meet in the theater or find us in the lobby afterwards. It gets crowded so allow extra time. Take a copy of this map with you (look for building 17). http://www.lakelandcc.edu/GENEINFO/campusmap.htm

DISCUSSION: Perhaps we will stop off for a coffee at a nearby establishment afterwards.

DESCRIPTION: In a small African village, four young girls who face ritual purification flee to the household of Colle Ardo, a strong-willed woman who has managed to shield her own teenage daughter from mutilation. Colle invokes the time-honored custom of moolaade (sanctuary) to protect the fugitives, and tension mounts as the ensuing stand-off pits Colle against village traditionalists and endangers the prospective marriage of her daughter to the heir-apparent to the tribal throne.

While this movie is from the land of Down Under, the country is Iran, not Australia. Iranian films are typically simple films with a touch of quirkiness. More "Little Miss Sunshine" rather than "Syriana". What a better way to learn about an "Axis of Evil" country than through laughter.

6:00 EATS: At the Museum cafe, food is self serve. We will try to have a few tables reserved near the windows looking onto the courtyard. Cash is preferred.

7:00 THEATER: Look for the group in the theater or meet in the lobby afterwards. More info: http://www.clevelandart.org/educef/viva2005/film/Film.asp

DISCUSSION: Return to the cafe for a coffee or light dessert. Or perhaps we will head over to the nearby Arabica.

DESCRIPTION: Iran, 2006, color, subtitles, directed by Mani Haghighi. The most acclaimed Iranian film of the year is based on an idea by the great Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami.

Four 50ish buddies returning to Tehran after a ski trip stop to topple a phallic-looking roadside rock formation. Whatever the rock symbolizes (patriarchy? religion? the state?), the film works first and foremost as a comic fable of confounding complications.

REVIEW: "Sophisticated audiences will enjoy this thoroughly modern spoof on masculine fixations." http://www.variety.com/index.asp?layout=features2006&content=jump&jump=review&head=berlin&nav=RBerlin&articleid=VE1117929479&cs=1

What a better way to spend a Sunday in February than watching a good movie followed by great conversation.

THEATER: Look for the group in the lobby or meet us afterwards under the marquis. Parking is behind the theater. (A little known route to get there: I-490 to E. 55th North, Right on Woodland Ave, Right on North Moreland.) You can also access the Square from the Rapid.

AFTER MOVIE EATS AND DISCUSSION: Sushi on the Square (13120 Shaker Square, 216-921-7744) is next to the theater. They have a wide selection of Japanese entrees. Cash is preferred.

DESCRIPTION: Starring: Vanessa Redgrave, Peter O'Toole.
Maurice and Ian are a pair of veteran actors who never quite hit the big time. Now in their golden years, they continue to work, though the jobs are far from glamorous. But their comfortable routine and witty banter over breakfast in a favorite café is disrupted by the arrival of Ian's grand-niece, Jessie. Jessie quickly tries her great-uncle's patience; but Maurice is absolutely taken with the young woman and proceeds to show her the cultural sights of London. As Maurice tries to give Jessie the benefit of his experience, he is surprised to discover how very little he actually knows about himself now that his life is drawing to a close.

DESCRIPTION: Set in Spain, a generational story of three women--a good mother who is desperately in love with a man who is far from being a saint, a young mother carrying a hard life upon her shoulders and an illegal hairdresser whose shop is the meeting point for all the neighborhood gossips. This is the new movie by Pedro Almodavar, director of "Women on the Edge of a Nervous Breakdown", a previous CIMG favorite.

Babel has been getting great reviews. Plus I am sure there will be plenty of things to talk about afterwards.

EATS: Quaker Steak is in the parking lot of the movie theater. Ask to be seated with the movie group. Cash is preferred.

THEATER: We will head inside at 7:05.

DISCUSSION: Join us for refreshments at a nearby restaurant for coffee, other beverages or a bite to eat.

DESCRIPTION: In the remote sands of the Moroccan desert, a rifle shot rings out--detonating a chain of events that will link an American tourist couple?s frantic struggle to survive, two Moroccan boys involved in an accidental crime, a nanny illegally crossing into Mexico with two American children and a Japanese teen rebel whose father is sought by the police in Tokyo. Separated by clashing cultures and sprawling distances, each of these four disparate groups of people are nevertheless hurtling towards a shared destiny of isolation and grief. In the course of just a few days, they will each face the dizzying sensation of becoming profoundly lost--lost in the desert, lost to the world, lost to themselves--as they are pushed to the farthest edges of confusion and fear as well as to the very depths of connection and love.
