Apparently Anvil fans only come out late at night. How else to explain the only movie time being 9:40 on a school night. We will be seeing another documentary about musicians; although you will find them on Broadway rather than a biker bar.

6:00 EATS
Jimmy's can get your food very quickly. It is less than a 5 minute walk to the theater.

Please let us know your dinner plans on your RSVP so that we can either save you a seat at the "Movie Group" table or plan to meet you at the movie. Checks are processed in groups of 2 or 3 so please bring cash to pay for your meal.

If you don't see us when you walk in, ask to be seated with the Movie Group.

7:05 MOVIE
Meet at the ENTRANCE DOOR 5 minutes ahead of time or look for the group inside the theater or meet us afterward outside the entrance door.

DESCRIPTION
Every Little Step explores the incredible journey of A Chorus Line from ambitious idea to international phenomenon. It compares and contrasts the original musical with the current revival. It investigates the societies in which they've debuted, and why the themes are so timeless and universal. Finally, it goes behind the scenes with exclusive interviews and footage of the revival's audition process, revealing the dramatic journey of the performers, and unfolding a story of life imitating art.

REVIEW
The 96-minute running time passes by much too quickly. Instant likability is the best tag for one of the best documentaries of the year..

Cherry Blossoms - Hanami
Germany, 2009, Doris Dörrie

Winner of the Roxanne T. Mueller Award at the 2009 Cleveland International Film Festival - Audience Choice Award for Best Film at the festival.

CHERRY BLOSSOMS is one of the most moving films you are ever likely to see. Directed by Doris Dörrie, and winner of many awards, it is a consistently surprising story of loss, regret, and rebirth. Rudi and Trudi Angermeier are a long-married Bavarian couple. Rudi is a gruff man who likes routine, though some day he might visit his eldest son in Tokyo. Trudi is a dedicated homemaker, a sensitive woman who has always wanted to visit Japan and explore her passion for Butoh dancing. When she learns that her husband doesn’t have long to live, Trudi decides not to tell him and instead persuades him to go on a trip with her. After a wrenching visit with their grown children in Berlin, who are too busy for them, they continue their holiday by the Baltic Sea. Unexpectedly, it is Trudi who dies, overnight in the hotel. Overwhelmed by his loss, and consumed with regret that he kept his wife from her dream, Rudi undertakes a journey to Tokyo for her. As he experiences the beautiful transience of the cherry blossoms, his friendship with a young Butoh dancer helps him to mourn and celebrate his wife. (In English and German with English subtitles)

DESCRIPTION
“With this story I tried to investigate serious questions about life and death, love and loss in a lightfooted and hopefully lighthearted way: does impermanence teach us to see things the way they really are? Is it possible to enjoy the present moment in the face of death? What makes us blossom? What makes us wither? How can we water our seeds of joy? We tried to apply these questions not only to the story but also to our way of shooting. We tried to discover beauty in each moment and let it pervade the story. For all of us, this blend of reality and fiction was strangely exhilarating. It was as if the line between waking and dreaming had been blurred and it wasn’t quite clear where we were, but at all times we felt much closer to the essence and I think this shows in the film.” Director Doris Dörrie..

This new piece of speculative history employs films clips and analyses of the crises faced by President John F. Kennedy to ponder how the Vietnam War might have unfolded had Kennedy not been assassinated.

Assembles an amazing array of recorded conversations and vintage newsreel, and offers up enough press conference footage to make one nostalgic for the days when an uncowed, penetrating press really did serve the public interest...

Now that we are approaching Summer Hours, what is a better movie to see than Summer Hours. This French film deals with issues surrounding the family stuff when a senior member passes on. We are switching restaurants because Bodega has a large event going on that day.

4:30 MOVIE
Meet at the ENTRANCE DOOR 5 minutes ahead of time or look for the group inside the theater or meet us afterward outside the entrance door.

6:30 EATS AND DISCUSSION
Mint Cafe is a Thai place that is the perfect meal after Summer Hours. It is on the East side (right) of 1791 Coventry almost to Mayfield Road. Take Cedar Road West and Coventry North (right). 216-320-9915. There should be street parking nearby or there is the parking garage on the right.

Better yet, weather permitting, if you are interested, I will be taking a 20 minute walk from the theater among the beautiful houses and trees to the Mint Cafe. You are welcome to join me.

SENKI (SHADOWS)
Macedonia/Germany/Italy/Bulgaria/Spain, 2007, Milcho Manchevski
The latest film from the director of Before the Rain is a sensuously photographed supernatural mystery-thriller in which a Macedonian (the country not the town) doctor who has survived a serious car crash starts encountering strange phenomena and weird people who seem to be telling him something (though in cryptic phrases or unfamiliar languages). Macedonia’s official entry for the 2008 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. “You won’t be bored…Well acted and very sexy.” –The NY Times. Cleveland premiere. Subtitles. 35mm. 130 min. Adults only! There is nudity, but as far as I can tell, it is done in a tasteful manner, bj.

5 p.m. Eats
Considering the early starting time (7 p.m.), plan on getting a quick burger, salad or tapas and a glass of wine at Palette at the Glidden House, 1901 Ford Dr., 216.231.8900. DESCRIPTION
“SHADOWS is a film about sex and death, and a few important things in between. It is an old-fashioned, slow-burn of a film. SHADOWS is in many ways my most personal film to date, a story of what happens if lady Macbeth had lived today and survived to have a grown-up son. This man, Lazar, would try to come to terms with her overbearing presence and her transgressions of the past. It is scary, but it offers no cheap thrills, sound bites nor easy solutions. It is about a man trying to have a dialogue with the dead, and becoming more alive for that experience.” Milcho Manchevski, director

REVIEW
The film has premiered at several international film festivals, the first being the Toronto International Film Festival. The film was well received with one of the festival's film critics calling it "Manchevski’s most ambitious film to date". Other critics, such as Patrick McGavin of Screen Daily, called it “ambitious and capably mounted (Manchevski) retains a very fine eye for composition, aided by the sensuous, beautiful work of Italian cinematographer Fabio Cianchetti. The movie's standout quality is the sexy, revealing work of the vibrant, highly alluring young actress Vesna Stanojevska, a professional musician making her film debut. She injects the film with an erotic intensity”..

Lemon Tree is coming to town! It was a favorite at the Film Festival. It is the struggle not unknown in the USA: keeping our country safe from terrorism without losing our moral sense of history. I still remember how much I enjoyed the director's previous movie "Syrian Bride".

Did you know there is a new Moroccan restaurant in town (the only one I am aware of)? Darna is located at 13114 Shaker Square and promises to be interesting. It is about a 10 minute drive from the theater. 216-862-2910.

Getting there is easy. Take Lee road South for a couple of miles. Make a right (west) on Shaker Blvd until your arrive in the Square. Look for the Movie Theater and park behind the Shaker Square Cinemas. Once you get out front, it is a few storefronts from the theater.

DESCRIPTION
Salma Zidane lives in a tiny Palestinian village on the West Bank. She is 45 years old and a widow. Her children have left home, and she is alone. When the Israeli minister of defense builds a house on the other side of the green line, Selma's lemon trees come to the attention of his bodyguards. Her trees are a security risk. They can hide terrorists and impede the bodyguards in their work. The lemon trees were planted by Salma's family many generations ago--they are synonymous with Salma's family history. Salma gets herself a lawyer. On the other side of the grove, the defense minister's wife, who has become more and more lonely and unhappy as her husband's political career has blossomed, feels increasingly drawn to Salma as the unfair battle between her husband and their Palestinian neighbors drags on. An invisible bond connects these two very different women who find themselves on the brink of a new phase in their lives.

REVIEW
Israeli filmmaker Eran Riklis' Lemon Tree is a lively deadpan comedy which, like his prior film The Syrian Bride, satirizes Israel's bureaucrats while remaining sympathetic to citizens who live within and adjacent to Israel's disputed borders..

DESCRIPTION
Miguel Santos, a.k.a Azucar, a Dominican pitcher from San Pedro de Macoris, struggles to make it to the big leagues and pull himself and his family out of poverty. Playing professionally at the Kansas City Knights baseball academy, Miguel finally gets his break at age 19 when he advances to the United States' minor league system. Miguel travels from his tight knit community in the Dominican Republic to a small town in Iowa, corn country, where he and a couple other Latin American teammates are the only Spanish-speaking people in the vicinity. As Miguel struggles with the new language and culture, despite the welcoming efforts of his host family, he is faced with an isolation he never before experienced. When his play on the mound falters, he begins examining more closely the world around him and his place within it, and ultimately questions the single-mindedness of his life's ambition

This movie looks too good to pass up. The Secret of the Grain is the winner of four 2008 Cesar Awards (French Oscars). This enchanting new film focuses on a multi-generational French-Arab family . . . when the clan's 61-year-old patriarch is laid off, he buys an old boat and opens a floating restaurant. REVIEW: "The Secret of the Grain" never slows, always engages, may continue too long, but ends too soon. It is made of life itself. Hafsia Herzi has four more films in the can and two in production. Remember her name.

NOTE TO FIRST TIME GOERS: If this is your first movie with the group, there is no fee to attend.

This group has been successful partly because members have a genuine interest in meeting fellow independent movie goers. We don't always know where to look for you, especially first timers.

We have multiple meeting places: 1. Entrance door to the movie in the theater hallway 5-10 minutes before the movie starts, 2. By the Marquee (or entrance door) after the movie, or 3. Reserved table at a restaurant under the name "Movie Group".

We don't always sit together in the movie theater but if you see a bunch of people talking about good movies they have seen, it is probably us. Please join in. We are always happy to get new people involved.

NOTE TO ALL: In the world of Independent films, it is recommended that you check back a few days before the event to make sure the movie, restaurant, location or time has not changed.

Vampyr - aka The Strange Adventure of David Gray
Cinematheque Elite
Carl Theodor Dreyer: Danish Prints

France/Germany, 1932, Carl Dreyer

Here’s a 35 mm archive print (from the Danish Film Institute in Copenhagen) of the most spectral of all vampire films—and one of the creepiest. It tells of a traveler who arrives at a village and notes the locals’ strange and sinister behavior. Director Dreyer skimps on narrative clarity to concentrate instead on haunting imagery and a claustrophobic mood of dread. No subtitles but few needed; some spoken translation will be provided; 75 minutes. Special admission $10, Cinematheque members and CIA students & staff $7; no passes, twofers, or radio winners.

9 p.m. - Afterward we can slip off to the Palette wine bar in the castle-like, ghostly Glidden House mansion for some discussion and a fine glass of Imperial Tokay or perhaps caffeine-laden brew to help us stay awake, alert and on-guard all night lest we be overwhelmed in our slumber………

7:15 MOVIE: Meet at the ENTRANCE DOOR 5 minutes ahead of time or look for the group inside the theater or meet us afterward outside the entrance door.

AFTER MOVIE DISCUSSION: We will head to Palette for wine, coffee, tapas and good conversation.

DESCRIPTION: Rotten Tomatoes: A stunningly photographed tale of horror, beautifully capturing an aura of fear and otherworldly menace. A young man stops at an inn, and discovers the village is rife with strange goings-on... murders, sudden illnesses, and weird skulking creatures. Then a doctor asks him to help a desperately sick girl by donating blood, and before long, the weakened wayfarer is lost in hallucinations, imagining himself buried alive... or could it be real?

REVIEW: “ Almost entirely devoid of the outright thrills associated with the genre, while managing to be one of the creepiest, most unsettling movies you're ever likely to see….Carl Dreyer’s horror film is one of the most perfect examples of German Stimmung——mood——in the cinema….Vampyr plays upon many archetypal fears of modern horror (science, doctors, disease, women, insanity, premature burial), but its power lies in its disorienting visual effects…If you've never seen a Carl Dreyer film and wonder why many critics, myself included, regard him as possibly the greatest of all filmmakers, this chilling horror fantasy is the perfect place to begin to understand.
