We all know we are in tough times today. Wendy and Lucy is a perfect low budget film that has been getting great reviews and won't be here long.

7:30 MOVIE: Meet at the ENTRANCE DOOR 5 minutes ahead of time or look for the group inside the theater or meet us afterward outside the entrance door.

This is opening night, so allow a little extra time.

9:15: EATS AND DISCUSSION: Felice is a new restaurant that opened up at 12505 Larchmere. It is less than a 10 minute drive from the theater and is somewhat close to I-490. 216-791-0918.

DESCRIPTION: Wendy Carol is driving to Ketchikan, Alaska in the hopes of a summer of lucrative work at the Northwestern Fish cannery, and the start of a new life with her dog, Lucy. When her car breaks down in Oregon, however, the thin fabric of her financial situation comes apart, and she confronts a series of increasingly dire economic decisions, with far ranging repercussions for herself and Lucy.

REVIEW: "Wendy and Lucy is a glimpse at a portion of society rarely captured so eloquently or heartbreakingly on film. Don't miss it."

The story of a child who is raised in the woods and later rescued by civilized society has been a topic of many books and movies (see Jungle Book). Wild Child, directed by a renowned French director, separates itself from all of these stories as it is based on the true story of a 2 year old child who is left to die in the woods but successfully lives on his own in the wilderness.

I anticipate a classic discussion in our group about whether civilization is good for man or is there more happiness in living like our ancestors.

6:00: EATS: Mi Pueblo is a classic Mexican restaurant in the Cleveland area. It is a 5 minute drive to the theater.

7:30 MOVIE: Meet at the ENTRANCE DOOR 10 minutes ahead of time or look for the group inside the theater or meet us afterward outside the entrance door.

DISCUSSION: We will head to Arabica for plenty of coffee and conversation.

DESCRIPTION: In one of his loveliest and most humane films, François Truffaut plays an 18th-century French scientist who takes in a feral boy found in the woods one day; he attempts to civilize and educate him. The movie addresses a host of issues and ideas: nature versus nurture, the individual versus society, Rousseau’s conception of the “noble savage.” Based on a true case from 1798.

REVIEW: ""The Wild Child" is a very moving, always intriguing film."

DESCRIPTION: Recently named the #1 film you must see on the big screen, David Lean’s most celebrated epic stars Peter O’Toole as T.E. Lawrence, a British adventurer who united Arab tribes against the Turks during WWI. Stunning desert landscapes and an all-star cast (Alec Guinness, Anthony Quinn, Omar Sharif, et al.) helped earn the film seven Oscars, including Best Picture, Director, and Cinematography. Presented with the support of Case Western Reserve University’s “Friends of English,” a support group of alumni and friends of the CWRU English Department. Dr. Louis D. Giannetti, CWRU Professor Emeritus of English and Film, will introduce the movie.

REVIEW: "Riveting from beginning to end, featuring stellar performances, amazing cinematography, and a story without a trace of fat, the film does everything an epic is supposed to do -- and more." http://www.reelviews.net/php_review_template.php?identifier=88

REVIEW: "The film is a tease, with a cheat of a final disclosure, but Philippe Claudel’s direction is both probing and delicate, and Scott Thomas’s face, even immobile, keeps you watching, searching for hints of her character’s past." http://nymag.com/movies/reviews/51544/

Description: This movie was a winner of the documentary prize at last year's Tribeca Film Festival. It is an impassioned and inspiring new film that tells the extraordinary story of how a small band of Liberian women-both Christian and Muslim - came together in 2003 in the midst of a bloody civil war, took on the violent warlords and corrupt Charles Taylor regime, and won a long-awaited peace for their shattered country. Two years later, a woman was elected president of Liberia, becoming Africa's first elected female head of state. "One of the truly heartening international political stories of recent years."

For a refreshing change from Hollywood's well-produced big budget "Oscar" releases, Momma's Man is a simple story about a slacker who can't quite move out of the comfort of his family's home. I hope you will be able to join us to see a new film maker in action.

DESCRIPTION: Directed by Azazel Jacobs, with Ken and Flo Jacobs. This fresh, funny, acclaimed drama focuses on a young L.A. father and husband who stays at his parents’ downtown loft, his childhood home, while on a business trip to New York. But his parents (played by the filmmaker’s real-life mom and dad) grow concerned when he keeps postponing his return to his own family. "This is independent cinema defined"

REVIEW: "On the surface, it's a straightforward low-budget tale about a grown man who visits his parents and refuses to leave. Yet deeper, darker currents move through Momma's Man, eddying around fears of letting go on both sides of the generational divide." http://www.boston.com/movies/display?display=movie&id=11947

Description: It's 1964, St. Nicholas in the Bronx. A vibrant, charismatic priest, Father Flynn (Philip Seymour Hoffman) is trying to upend the schools' strict customs, which have long been fiercely guarded by Sister Aloysius Beauvier (Meryl Streep), the iron-gloved Principal who believes in the power of fear and discipline. The winds of political change are sweeping through the community, and indeed, the school has just accepted its first black student, Donald Miller.
But when Sister James (Amy Adams), a hopeful innocent, shares with Sister Aloysius her guilt-inducing suspicion that Father Flynn is paying too much personal attention to Donald, Sister Aloysius sets off on a personal crusade to unearth the truth and to expunge Flynn from the school. Now, without a shard of proof besides her moral certainty, Sister Aloysius locks into a battle of wills with Father Flynn which threatens to tear apart the community with irrevocable consequence.

There are quite a few good movies to choose from, but I selected the one that is a little less well-known, but a big winner at the Golden Globes and possibly the Academy awards.

DESCRIPTION: The untold story of the historic encounter between Richard Nixon, the disgraced president with a legacy to save, and David Frost, a jet-setting newsman with the interview of a lifetime, that changed the relationship between politics and journalism forever.

For three years after being forced from office, U.S. President Richard Nixon (Frank Langella) remained silent. But in summer 1977, the steely, cunning former commander-in-chief agreed to sit for one all-inclusive interview to confront the questions of his time in office and the Watergate scandal that ended his presidency.

Over the course of their encounter, each man would reveal his own insecurities, ego and reserves of dignity—ultimately setting aside posturing in a stunning display of unvarnished truth.

REVIEW: "Frost/Nixon works on just about every level, but above all else it’s a feast of acting. " http://www.kansascity.com/710/story/948751.html

** NOTE TO FIRST TIME GOERS: If this is your first movie with the group, there is no fee to attend.

This group has been successful partly because members have a genuine interest in meeting fellow independent movie goers. We don't always know where to look for you, especially first timers.

We have multiple meeting places: 1. Entrance door to the movie in the theater hallway 5-10 minutes before the movie starts, 2. By the Marquee (or entrance door) after the movie, or 3. Reserved table at a restaurant under the name "Movie Group".

We don't always sit together in the movie theater but if you see a bunch of people talking about good movies they have seen, it is probably us. Please join in. We are always happy to get new people involved.

** NOTE TO ALL: In the world of Independent films, it is recommended that you check back a few days before the event to make sure the movie, restaurant, location or time has not changed.

Cost: $1.50

Well, it is 2009 and the Cinemateque is back. I couldn't decide between two movies showing this Friday, so optionally, we may see both. They are both fairly short. You are welcome to see one or the other, depending on your interest.

IOUSA explains in an entertaining format how our country got into the deep "do do" that it did, way before the current financial crisis.
KENNY, a port-a-potty installer, is a solution provider for another "do do" problem.

Non-member price is $8.00 for one movie or $14.00 for both.

Better yet, become a member, take a tax deduction and you get in EVERY movie for only $6. (I do.)

6:00: EATS: L'Albatros Brasserie & Bar is the former "That Place on Bellflower". It just opened up last month. The food is outstanding. It is a little over a 5 minute walk or drive to the theater.

If you don't see us when you walk in, ask to be seated with the Movie Group.

** Please let us know your dinner plans on your RSVP so that we can either save you a seat at the "Movie Group" table or plan to meet you at the movie. Cash is highly recommended. **

I.O.U.S.A: “This year’s An Inconvenient Truth” is how critic Peter Rainer described this new documentary that sounds the alarm about the ballooning national debt and its threat to America. Released in major cities a few weeks before September’s Wall Street meltdown, the film is even more timely now. “It accomplishes an amazing thing. It explains the national debt, the foreign trade deficit, the decrease in personal savings, how the prime interest rate works, and the weakness of our leaders.” –Roger Ebert.

REVIEW: "as essential viewing as any common sense advice you've received from parents/grandparents about living within your means" http://oldschoolreviews.com/rev_2000/iousa.htm

KENNY: This uproarious comedy, a major prizewinner Down Under, takes potty humor to new, populist heights. Kenny is a lovable Aussie lug who makes his living installing port-a-potties at public events; he also can’t contain his enthusiasm for sharing his knowledge of toilets and sanitation with those he meets. Flush with big laughs, Kenny also overflows with heart. Our audience loved it when we first showed it in August. We will again present the original, uncut, unrated Australian version of the movie, which is in English with English subtitles.

REVIEW: "Charming comedy with a strong script and a delightful central performance from Shane Jacobson." http://www.viewlondon.co.uk/films/kenny-film-review-20425.html
