Before 2009 even gets settled in, we are off to see what is probably going to be one of Oscar's most recognized films. Even though the story line in someways seems quaint (a gay politician?), Milk still has lessons on an issue that is still being grappled in 2009.

NOTE THE CHANGE I LOCATION SINCE VALLEY VIEW DETERMINED THEY DON'T HAVE ENOUGH PEOPLE WILLING TO SEE AN AWARD WINNING MOVIE.

4:10 MOVIE: Meet at the movie ENTRANCE DOOR 5 minutes ahead of time or look for the group inside the theater or meet us afterward outside the entrance door.

6:30: EATS AND DISCUSSION: Susan says it is good luck to eat Chinese on New Year's day. Unfortunately Sun Luck is closed on on New Year's Day, so we will make a left on Cedar and Right on Coventry to Hunan on Coventry. 1800 Coventry Road Cleveland Hts. 216-371-0777. http://www.hunancoventry.com/ If you don't see us when you walk in, ask to be seated with the Movie Group.

** Please let us know your dinner plans on your RSVP so that we can either save you a seat at the "Movie Group" table or plan to meet you at the movie. Cash is highly recommended. **

DESCRIPTION: In 1977, Harvey Milk (Sean Penn) was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, becoming the first openly gay man to be voted into major public office in America. His victory was not just a victory for gay rights; he forged coalitions across the political spectrum. From senior citizens to union workers, Harvey Milk changed the very nature of what it means to be a fighter for human rights and became, before his untimely death in 1978, a hero for all Americans.

Milk charts the last eight years of Harvey Milk's (Sean Penn) life. While living in New York City, he turns 40. Looking for more purpose, Milk and his lover Scott Smith (James Franco) relocate to San Francisco, where they found a small business, Castro Camera, in the heart of a working-class neighborhood that was soon to become a haven for gay people from around the country. With his beloved Castro neighborhood and beautiful city empowering him, Milk surprises Scott and himself by becoming an outspoken agent for change. He seeks equal rights and opportunities for all, and his great love for the city and its people brings him backing from young and old, straight and gay alike—at a time when prejudice and violence against gays was openly accepted as the norm.

REVIEW: "A rare bio-pic of sufficient depth and emotional complexity to humanize an icon while simultaneously conveying the significance of his lasting contributions to the culture." http://newsblaze.com/story/20081213144052kamw.nb/topstory.html

Only recently did I know that the rock group Styx named their most successful album "Grand Illusion" from a French classic, possibly the greatest anti-war movie of all time.

While the film was released a few years before WWII, some of the same principles are applicable to wars that have been waged 60-70 years later. So, be a Renegade and Come Sail Away to see Grand Illusion, in these less than Best of Times.

1:30: Meet at the movie ENTRANCE DOOR 5 minutes ahead of time or look for the group inside the theater or meet us afterward outside movie entrance. NOTE we are at the ART MUSEUM, *NOT* the Cinemateque / Institute of art.

3:45 EATS AND DISCUSSION: We will walk over to the cafe for coffee, tea or a light bite.

http://www.tiff07.ca/images/films2007/707112015001386.jpg

DESCRIPTION: Directed by Jean Renoir, with Jean Gabin, Pierre Fresnay, and Erich von Stroheim. This humanistic masterpiece, one of the great anti-war movies, explores class differences among French prisoners and their German captors at a POW camp during WWI.

REVIEW: "La Grande Illusion, even after more than a half a century, is still a phenomenal work of art-- elegant, eloquent and powerfully moving." http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/grand_illusion/articles/1123160/la_grande_illusion_even_after_more_than_a_half_a_century_is_still_a_phenomenal_work_of_art_elegant_eloquent_and_powerfully_moving

We tried to see Trouble the Water a few months back but the release date was pushed back to December.
Then it showed in December for exactly one week.
We missed it again!!!

With all the turmoil in Mumbai these last few weeks, I can't think of a better movie to see than this Indian version of American Idol. The reviews have been astounding and Academy award talk is in consideration. I hope you can make it for this special movie.

6:00 EATS: The Cedar Lee Pub is literally around the corner from the theater.

If you don't see us when you walk in, ask to be seated with the Movie Group.

** Please let us know your dinner plans on your RSVP so that we can either save you a seat at the "Movie Group" table or plan to meet you at the movie. Cash is highly recommended. **

7:35: Meet at the movie ENTRANCE DOOR 5 minutes ahead of time or look for the group inside the theater or meet us afterward outside under the marquis.

AFTER MOVIE DISCUSSION: We will head back to Jimmy's for coffee or a beverage. Their beet cake is delicious.

DESCRIPTION: A penniless, eighteen year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, he's one question away from winning a staggering 20 million rupees on India's "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" But when the show breaks for the night, suddenly, he is arrested on suspicion of cheating. After all, how could an uneducated street kid possibly know so much? Determined to get to the bottom of Jamal's story, the jaded Police Inspector spends the night probing Jamal's incredible past, from his riveting tales of the slums where he and his brother Salim survived by their wits to his hair-raising encounters with local gangs to his heartbreak over Latika, the unforgettable girl he loved and lost.

Each chapter of Jamal's increasingly layered story reveals where he learned the answers to the show's seemingly impossible quizzes. But one question remains a mystery: what is this young man with no apparent desire for riches really doing on the game show?

REVIEW: "It doesn't happen often, but when it does, look out: a movie that rocks and rolls, that transports, startles, delights, shocks, seduces. A movie that is, quite simply, great." http://www.philly.com/inquirer/columnists/steven_rea/20081121__Slumdog_Millionaire__is_that_rare_great_movie.html

A possibly better alternative to Twilight.
Let the Right One In reinvigorates the seemingly tired vampire genre by effectively mixing scares with intelligent storytelling.

Rated: R for some bloody violence including disturbing images, brief nudity and language

Runtime: 1 hr 54 mins

Genre: Foreign Films

6:15 EATS: The Aroshi Wrap is in the same block and building as the Cedar Lee. Is on the corner as you come from the parking lot behind the theater.

A well-crafted horror film in the tradition of Guillermo del Toro's THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE, Swedish import LET THE RIGHT ONE IN ably blends genre chills with genuine feeling. Oskar (Kåre Hedebrant) is a 12-year-old outcast who is frequently picked on by his classmates. He dreams of getting his revenge, but he never stands up to the boys. With the arrival of his new next-door neighbor, 12-year-old Eli (Lina Leandersson), Oskar may finally have found a friend, ally, and first love. But Eli is no ordinary girl: she must keep her pale skin out of the sunlight, she can perform inhuman physical feats, and she has thirst for blood. The bodies begin to pile up, but Oskar can't stay away from the girl who has finally given him courage. Based on the novel by John Ajvide Linqvist (who also wrote the script), LET THE RIGHT ONE IN is the best kind of horror film: one that transcends the tropes of the genre to become something new. This is director Tomas Alfredson's first foray into horror, and he doesn't hesitate to include bits of vampire mythology. But his background making comedies and dramas gives the film a surprising depth; the relationship between Oskar and Eli is tentative and sweet, even though their interactions may be surrounded by blood and violence. Composer Johan Soderqvist and the sound department create a fascinating palette of music and sounds that add to the film's perfectly chilly mood, and setting the film in a snowy Swedish suburb gives director of photography Hoyte Van Hoytema a starkly beautiful environment for shooting. Though LET THE RIGHT ONE IN is ostensibly about a pair of children, this is a horror film for adults. There are plenty of scares, but it remains moving and intelligent, a rare feat for the genre.

REVIEW: "Let the Right One In (in Swedish with English subtitles and rated R for some bloody violence including disturbing images, brief nudity and language) is so fresh and original that it makes what's currently available in horror seem stale and formulaic."Cinema Junkie

Boy in the Striped Pajamas has gone into limited Mainstream release. It is different than most holocaust movies because it tells the story from the Nazi side. This is one of those movies where you may really like the story or not, because it doesn't connect enough.

7:25 MOVIE: We are meeting at Valley View theater off Canal Road, hopefully making it more convenient for more people.

Meet at the movie ENTRANCE DOOR 5 minutes ahead of time or look for the group inside the theater or meet us afterward outside the entrance door.

AFTER MOVIE DISCUSSION: We will head to Yours Truly for coffee and dessert.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/arts/graphics/2008/09/06/bobookclub06.jpg

DESCRIPTION: The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is a fictional story that offers a unique perspective on how prejudice, hatred and violence affect innocent people, particularly children, during wartime. Through the lens of an eight-year-old boy largely shielded from the reality of World War II, we witness a forbidden friendship that forms between Bruno, the son of Nazi commandant, and Schmuel, a Jewish boy held captive in a concentration camp. Though the two are separated physically by a barbed wire fence, their lives become inescapably intertwined. The imagined story of Bruno and Shmuel sheds light on the brutality, senselessness and devastating consequences of war from an unusual point of view. Together, their tragic journey helps recall the millions of innocent victims of the Holocaust.

REVIEW: "Although it's told from the perspective of a child, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is as shattering as any film about the Holocaust could be, perhaps more so." http://www.azcentral.com/ent/movies/articles/2008/11/13/20081113pyjamas.html

Man on Wire is one of those documentaries that really surprises you. For the first time I can remember, all 129 reviewers on Rotten Tomatoes gave it a thumbs up. It is an excellent movie and what a better way to spend a Sunday afternoon, than with independent moviegoers.

4:00 MOVIE: Meet at the movie ENTRANCE DOOR 10 minutes ahead of time or look for the group inside the theater or meet us afterward outside the entrance. The theater has its own free parking lot.

6:00 EATS AND DISCUSSION: Nido's has excellent food at a reasonable price. It is a 5-10 minute drive from the theater. A free parking lot is available just to the east of the railroad tracks on the north side of Mayfield. Nido's is a just down the road on the south side at 12020 Mayfield Road. 216.421.0221

DESCRIPTION: In August 1974, French high-wire artist Philippe Petit snuck into the World Trade Center complex, surreptitiously stretched a cable between the twin towers, and danced on it for almost an hour one morning while stunned spectators (and police) held their breath 1,350 feet below. This daring stunt (dubbed “the artistic crime of the century”) is revisited in this suspenseful, exhilarating documentary that plays like a heist movie but extols the human imagination.

REVIEW: "It's a hell of a story, and Petit is a mesmerising storyteller, with an extravagantly poetic turn of phrase and the glittering eye of the Ancient Mariner." http://www.theage.com.au/news/entertainment/film/film-reviews/man-on-wire/2008/10/16/1223750214348.html

Now for something a little different.

The Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival on Tour brings together award-winning environmental films that help raise awareness of the natural world and our role in it, and motivates viewers to make a difference locally and globally. Enjoy a reception with food, beverages and exhibits by local environmental group beforehand.

http://www.wildandscenicfilmfestival.org/

These are not all documentaries so it is a perfect event to learn a little and also be entertained on a November Saturday evening event.

6:00 RECEPTION: Meet other moviegoers, local environmental groups and enjoy complimentary food. Beer and wine for $2.

Note: We will do our best to find everyone, but since this is a public event, it may be difficult to get together. Memorize everyone's pictures.

7:00 MOVIE: Meet at the movie ENTRANCE DOOR 10 minutes ahead of time or look for the group inside the theater or meet us afterward outside the entrance.

AFTER MOVIE DISCUSSION: Q & A follow up conducted by David Beach, director of the Museum's GreenCityBlueLake institute.

Note the Movie Change: Trouble for Water has been moved to a December opening date. We will see it then.

This is a special Monday meeting for our group. I hope you can make it.

6:00 EATS: Last time we were at the Lemon Grass, we had great service and good meals. It is a simple walk from the theater.

If you don't see us when you walk in, ask to be seated with the Movie Group.

** Please let us know your dinner plans on your RSVP so that we can either save you a seat at the "Movie Group" table or plan to meet you at the movie. Cash is highly recommended. **

7:10 MOVIE: Meet at the movie ENTRANCE DOOR 5 minutes ahead of time or look for the group inside the theater or meet us afterward outside under the marquis.

AFTER MOVIE DISCUSSION: We will head back to Jimmy's for coffee or a beverage. Their beet cake is delicious.

DESCRIPTION: When Kym (Anne Hathaway) returns to the Buchman family home for the wedding of her sister Rachel (Rosemarie Dewitt), she brings a long history of personal crisis and family conflict along with her. The wedding party's abundant cast of friends and relations have gathered for an idyllic weekend of feasting, music and love, but Kym—with her black-comic one-liners and knack for bombshell drama—is a catalyst for long-simmering tensions in the family dynamic.

REVIEW: "It's a successful experiment that leaves you with a mix of hope and despair. To the lovers, best wishes. To the lonely, our sympathies." http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20081024/OPINION03/810240306/1034/ENT02

** NOTE TO FIRST TIME GOERS: This group has been successful partly because members have a genuine interest in meeting fellow independent movie goers. We don't always know where to look for you, especially first timers,

We have multiple meeting places: 1. Entrance door to the movie in the theater hallway 5-10 minutes before the movie starts, 2. By the Marquee (or entrance door) after the movie, or 3. Reserved table at a restaurant under the name "Movie Group".

We don't always sit together in the movie theater but if you see a bunch of people talking about good movies they have seen, it is probably us. Please join in. We are always happy to get new people involved.

** NOTE TO ALL: In the world of Independent films, it is recommended that you check back a few days before the event to make sure the movie, restaurant, location or time has not changed.

The French have done it again. Another very creative film that is what foreign films are all about. The previews have been fantastic. Looking forward to another great movie.

6:00 EATS: Jimmy's has great food that is worth exploring. It is a simple walk from the theater.

If you don't see us when you walk in, ask to be seated with the Movie Group.

DESCRIPTION: Jaded novelist and too happily married "ladies man," Charles Saint-Denis' latest conquest is TV weathergirl Gabrielle Deneige. At once naïve and unstoppable, Gabrielle doesn't need to be convinced to enter into a sordid May-September relationship with a celebrated member of the intelligentsia. However, tugging at her other arm with the pull of the entire haute bourgeoisie is young Paul, the cute but dangerously schizophrenic scion of a Lyon pharmaceutical magnate. What's a girl to do?

REVIEW: "A cool study of erotic longing, misguided love and class warfare in the civilized spheres of French society, Claude Chabrol's A Girl Cut in Two, despite its high melodrama and wicked humor, delivers a real emotional wallop." http://www.philly.com/inquirer/columnists/steven_rea/20080919_Class_war_played_out_in_a_love_triangle.html
