We are back to the Art Museum to see a coming of age movie from Japan. Come learn about J-Pop. We will combine this with a quick get together on the Oval.

The Japanese Language Meetup group will also be joining us. http://japanese.meetup.com/535/calendar/8331735/

6:00 EATS: Wade Oval Wednesdays take place directly in front of the Art museum. They have plenty of food and entertainment. http://www.universitycircle.org/content/wow_2008.asp Even if you can't make it this week, this is a great series to come at another time this summer.

Look for the group near the food vendor eating tables (to the left of the stage as you face it). I will be wearing an Indian's cap. If you are new to the group, drop me an email and we can figure out a way to find you.

6:45 MOVIE: Meet at the movie entrance door 5 minutes ahead of time or look for the group inside the theater or meet us afterwards near the entrance. Buy your ticket upstairs. The theater is downstairs and the screen is a bit small.

AFTER MOVIE DISCUSSION: We will head back to the Oval to talk over the movie.

DESCRIPTION: Directed by Nobuhiro Yamashita, with Du-na Bae. This delightful piece of J-pop is set at a Japanese high school, where four teenagers in an all-girl band prepare for the annual "rock-off." "One of the year?s most unexpected pleasures" ?The New York Times.

REVIEW: "An extremely well-written, emotionally complex coming-of-age tale that has a John Hughesian respect for teenage angst." http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2007/04/06/DDG88P2PSK1.DTL#flick2

I know we only have a week's notice, but another movie at the Cedar Lee has caught my eye. As many of us are experiencing or have experienced our parents getting older, we know of the challenges that come with this change. Father is a great movie to allow us to reflect on these issues.

5:05 MOVIE: Meet at the movie entrance door near the ticket counter 5 minutes ahead of time or look for the group inside the theater or meet us afterwards near the Marquis.

7:00 EATS AND DISCUSSION: Trattoria on the Hill is a classic restaurant in the heart of Little Italy. They have their own parking lot. Weather permitting, we will look to be on their patio. It is a 10 minute drive from the theater. 12207 Mayfield Road, 216.421.2700.

** Please let us know your dinner plans on your RSVP so that we can either save you a seat at the "Movie Group" table or plan to meet you at the movie. Cash is highly recommended. **

http://www.tribute.ca/tribute_objects/images/movies/When_Did_You_Last_See_Your_Father/wdylsyf4.jpg

DESCRIPTION: Blake Morrison (Colin Firth) is a happily married middle-aged guy who has always had a troubled relationship with his father, Arthur (Jim Broadbent). After discovering his dad has a terminal illness, Blake flashes back to all the moments in his life when Arthur didn't live up to the idealistic vision his son had of him, especially in regards to a strange woman (Sarah Lancaster) who may or may not have born Arthur's illegitimate child.

REVIEW: "When Did You Last See Your Father? taps into the conflicting feelings so many of us can have about parents who haunt us because they're difficult, which is part of what makes them irreplaceable." http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20204728,00.html

One of society's biggest challenges is dealing with Suburban Sprawl. Noted as the perfect storm, it negatively affects all 3 E's: Environment, Energy usage and local Economy. I hope you will join us to learn how one housing development became a catalyst for progress re-evaluation.

7:00 EATS: Sterlings is a Cleveland landmark restaurant and offers some of the best Eastern European cuisine in the city. Not to be missed, there will be music while we dine. It is close to the I-90 or downtown freeway exits. It is an easy 10-15 minute drive to the Cinemateque. There is free parking in the parking lot.

** Please let us know you dinner plans on your RSVP so that we can either save you a seat at the "Movie Group" table or plan to meet you at the movie. Cash is highly recommended. **

8:55 MOVIE: Meet at the movie entrance door near the ticket counter 10 minutes ahead of time or look for the group inside the theater or meet us afterwards outside the entrance. There is free parking in the parking lot.

AFTER MOVIE DISCUSSION: We might head over to Sergios for a light bite, drink, dessert or coffee. It is under a five minute walk. Weather permitting, they have a nice patio.

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/ABPub/2008/04/03/2004324779.jpg

DESCRIPTION: Executive produced by Terrence Malick (Days of Heaven, The Thin Red Line), this mesmerizing, award-winning documentary on suburban sprawl boasts the brooding melancholy and sublime visual splendor of his own films. Demonstrating how a planned housing development outside Austin, TX would pollute and despoil a popular local swimming hole, the movie forces us to reexamine the American Dream and the meaning of ?growth? in this era of rising home foreclosures, failing financial institutions, and shrinking natural resources.

REVIEW: "By turns rapturously beautiful and unspeakably sad while considering the consequences of unchecked urban sprawl." http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ent/movies/reviews/5821489.html

The Art Museum and Cinemateque are showing a retrospective on the well-known film maker in Europe, Manoel de Oliveira. http://www.clevelandart.org/educef/viva2005/film/49329208.asp. Talk about inspiring, he made his first film in 1931 and has another coming out later this year!

6:00 EATS: Come for a quick bite to eat at the self-serve Cleveland Museum of Art cafeteria. We will try to have a few tables reserved near the windows looking onto the courtyard. Cash is preferred. There is a parking lot at the museum or you can park on the street.

7:00 MOVIE: Meet at the movie entrance door IN THE THEATER HALLWAY 5 minutes ahead of time or look for the group inside the theater or meet us afterwards outside the entrance. Note: the theater is on the lower level and the screen is a bit small.

8:45 AFTER MOVIE DISCUSSION: We will head over to Sergios for a light bite, drink, dessert or coffee. It is a five minute walk from the Art museum. Weather permitting, they have a nice patio. (216) 231-1234

DESCRIPTION: Oliveira was youngster of 95 when he made this movie with Michel Piccoli, John Malkovich, and Catherine Deneuve. When tragedy strikes, a septuagenarian actor living in Paris perseveres with his life and career, and finds new joy in caring for his six-year-old grandson. Piccoli is superb in this touching ?study in grief that is flooded with happiness?

A couple of years ago, an Italian epic drama called "Best in Youth" was one of the best-reviewed movies of the year. Except for the fact that it was 6 hours long, it would have been the perfect movie to see (for the record, it only seemed like 3 hours). "Brother" is a sensible 1 hour 45 minutes.

NOTE THE CHANGE IN TIMES AND RESTAURANT

5:30 EATS: Nighttown is well-known nationally for its Jazz. Its food is also quite good. Weather permitting, we will be dining alfresco. It is under a 10 minute drive to the theater. http://www.nighttowncleveland.com

DESCRIPTION: In '60s era Italy, Manrico (Riccardo Scarmaccio) and Accio (Elio Germano) are brothers, but are completely opposite in their personalities. Manrico is the handsome, outgoing one while Accio is the quiet one. The sibling rivalry becomes increasingly strained when Manrico joins the Communists and Accio joins the Fascists.

REVIEW: "The fey illogic in the title of My Brother is an Only Child hints at the style of this funny-sad film, which flips from dark to light moods and back with suave, unpredictable dexterity." http://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/movies/chi-11-my-brother-is-an-only-child-review,1,2964286.story

A few years back, the Film Festival showed "hygiene" films from the 40's that had many of us laughing in the aisles. Not to be outdone, Mormons created a series of short stories in the 60's that described topics such as promiscuity and heaven (presumably not together).

Join us for a light hearted education of these religious films of the 1960's. (Note that these films do not reflect a positive or negative perspective on Mormonism, rather on how much societal norms have changed in the last 40 years.)

6:00 EATS: Come for a quick bite to eat at the Cleveland Museum of Art cafeteria. We will try to have a few tables reserved near the windows looking onto the courtyard. Cash is preferred. Park in the free parking lot of the Cinemateque and walk across the street to the Art Museum.

DESCRIPTION: Welcome fabled West Coast film collector and exhibitor Dennis Nyback, who will present two different programs of rare, funny short movies from his vast 16mm film collection. a jaw-dropping collection of short "educational" films produced by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during the 1960s. Titles include Wetzel O. Whitaker's Man?s Search for Happiness, perhaps the most widely-seen Mormon movie ever, produced for the 1964 New York World?s Fair; Whitaker's How Do I Love Thee? (1965), a study of two college roommates, chaste Jan and promiscuous Penny; an excerpt from You Make the Difference (1967); and Scott Whitaker's For Time or Eternity? (1969), in which a "pre-mortal soul" in heaven observes life (and marriage) on earth.

REVIEW: "The first film made by the Mormon Church that I had ever saw knocked me over. It was called "For Time or Eternity". It was so skillfully made and had such wacky ideas. It was a film like no other I had seen. "

DESCRIPTION: Walter Vale (Richard Jenkins) is an unassuming economics professor who is completely fed up with his boring life. While mostly living in Connecticut, Walter also maintains an apartment in NYC that he rarely visits. But on one of his trips to the city, he finds a couple, Tarek (Haaz Sleiman) and Zainab (Danai Gurira), squatting in his space. Striking up an unusual friendship with the couple, Walter helps them out, especially when Tarek is thrown into a detention center after being caught living in the country illegally.

REVIEW: "The Visitor is America working out the demons of Sept. 11, 2001. Director Thomas McCarthy brilliantly focuses on characters who love life despite the less savory circumstances surrounding them."

On a regular basis, a number of you travel a ways from the West Side to see great independent films. To return the favor, we are heading west to Lorain Community College for their Film Series to see ONLY HUMAN, an outrageous slapstick comedy laced with serious political and religious overtones.

Check the Film Series for all their great films. http://www.lorainccc.edu/Stocker+Arts+Center/fss.htm

LCCC is easy to find, just south off I-90. http://www.lorainccc.edu/Stocker+Arts+Center/Map.htm It seems farther than it really is. It is approximately a 25 minute drive from downtown Cleveland and five minutes from I-90 (Rt. 254 exit).

6:00 EATS: Michael and I selected Quaker because we weren't able to come up with a locally owned / unique restaurant close to the theater. If you have another idea, let me know and we might switch the dinner location. It is a five minute drive to LCCC.

** If you plan on joining us, please tell us on your RSVP so that we may save you a seat at the group table. Cash is highly recommended.

7:30 MOVIE: The Stocker Arts Center is well-marked when you enter the campus. Meet at the movie entrance door IN THE THEATER HALLWAY 5 minutes ahead of time or look for the group inside the theater or meet us afterwards outside the door.

AFTER MOVIE DISCUSSION: We will find a close place nearby to hash out the film's zaniness.

DESCRIPTION: This winner of several comedy film festival awards stars Oscar-nominated Argentine star Norma Aleandro as Gloria, the matriarch of a crazy Spanish Jewish family that includes Tania, a single mother living at home who flaunts her sexuality and is proud of regularly sleeping with strangers; her six-year-old daughter, Paula, who goes around pretending she's pregnant; David, who has suddenly decided to become Orthodox and forces his beliefs on everyone else; Ernesto, Gloria's missing husband; and Dudu, the aged, deaf grandfather who is more than a bit daffy. Into this ragtag group comes beloved daughter Leni who is bringing home her new fiance, Rafi. Although she let everyone think he was an Israeli Jew, he is actually a proud Palestinian.

REVIEW: "Writer-directors Dominic Harari and Teresa Pelegri have penned an amusing script and, as directors, inject a delicate human texture into the story's intermixing of capricious zaniness, frank sensuality and Mideast politics." http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn?node=cityguide/profile&id=1105671&categories=Movies&nm=1

NOTE TO FIRST TIME GOERS: This group has been successful partly because members have a genuine interest in meeting fellow independent movie goers. We don't always know where to look for you, especially first timers,

We don't always sit together in the movie theater but if you see a bunch of people talking about good movies they have seen, it is probably us. Please join in. We are always happy to get new people involved.

NOTE TO ALL: In the world of Independent films, it is recommended that you check back a few days before the event to make sure the movie, restaurant, location or time has not changed.

Cost: $8.00
