May 17, 2008 - A DAY THAT WILL LIVE IN INFAMY!

One of our SCMF members (who is also an SCMF Eclectic Cinema member) alerted me that the American Cinematheque was going to be hosting another run of their Great Big 70MM Festival. With Summer Movie Season in kickoff mode, I knew it would be tough trying to find a free weekend night to catch one of the films. But I did find an opening in our schedule on Saturday May 17th on which The Egyptian will be screening Alfred Hitchcock's umpteenth classic "Vertigo" with James Stewart & Kim Novak at 7:30 PM. The plan was set...

...and then I received an email.

There's a new cable/satellite network called Reelz Channel which deals with nothing but movies 24-7-365. They have a show called Secret's Out hosted by renowed film critic/historian/author Leonard Maltin. This show focuses on finding overlooked and undiscovered gems in the world of film. The email I received was from a segment producer of the show who is putting together a segment on extreme movie fans. As it turns out, they're looking to do a story on...

SCMF ECLECTIC CINEMA herself!!!

Yep...groovy, ain't it?!

Needless to say, this is a monunmental achievement for our sister group. Usually, we at SCMF Original Recipe get all the "glory," but the producers SPECIFICALLY asked for SCMF ECLECTIC CINEMA to be featured on their show. It is truly an honor to see our spinoff group get recognized in such a huge way!

So...here's the game plan:

The Secret's Out folks want to film & interview us (yep...not just me, but US!) BEFORE, DURING and AFTER the film to capture our anticipation, reaction and enjoyment of this Hitchcock classic. They sent us a shooting schedule for the evening. In order to accomodate them & ensure that they have enough time to film us, we are calling for an earlier Meetup time than usual.

Those who wish to take part in the Secret's Out taping need to meet us IN FRONT OF THE EGYPTIAN THEATRE at 5:30 PM. If you don't wish to take part in the taping, go ahead and meet us at 7:00 PM. "Vertigo" starts at 7:30 PM. It is very important that everyone arrives no later than our specified Meetup time. Bring your energy, your enthusiasm, and, most of all, your love for our group and the films that we cover!

"Vertigo Plot Details: With its stunning visuals and gripping characters, Alfred Hitchcock's psychological suspense masterpiece continues to entrance audiences. Showcasing Kim Novak in startling dual role, VERTIGO finds suspended San Francisco detective "Scottie" Ferguson (James Stewart) becoming obsessed with Madeleine Elster (Novak), a troubled woman he is privately hired to follow. Tragedy ensues, and when Ferguson later stumbles upon Judy Barton (also played by Novak), a young woman who bears a striking resemblance to Madeleine, his obsession spirals out of control.

"Vertigo" is being presented in 70MM - a camera process that was prominent from the 50's through the mid 90's that boasts twice the image & clarity of a standard 35MM film. For more info on 70MM films, visit the website In 70MM.

I've seen this movie 3xs in the past year on the small screen. This movie was heavily featured in the Hollywood Bowl presents, "Movies On The Big Screen" where a live symhony orchestra was conducted by the very famous, John Williams. The score for this flick is very haunting and beautiful. I love Jimmy Stewart. He's one of my fave old school actors. Opportunities like this don't come around often....don't let this extra special event to be a part of entertainment history pass.
