I'm just curious, but who knows where to get good quality stuff for a pirate outfit. If it doesn't cost too much that's better, but if not that's okay too. I'm not exactly sure where to go & I don't want to get anything that's poor quality.

Ahoy Lass. If you sew the least expensive way is to get Simplicity patterns.

Well now, I've "scavenged" outfits over the years - with a good imagination - you can find pieces and parts at Walmart, Good Will, thrift stores, just about anywear. I have a one "piraty" outfit of a long red top and red capri pants (walmart) and a black vest. I then dress it up with jewelry and sometimes cat ears. Look over pictures and see the individual parts. I've also spent a good chunk of loot at the Renn faire on leather bodices and different colored rennie tops. I'm a beginning seamstress so finding things here and there has actually worked pretty good for me on most costuming genres.
Hope this helps, Out to sea now, Mistress Jingles |

www.etsy.com enter a search word, like peasant blouse, gypsy, pirate, or something of the sort. also, ebay has some great crap, er, finds. i found some high quality corsets on ebay; they come from Hong Kong, so take a minute to arrive, but are so worth it! all the corsets i saw at the store junkman's daughter were priced at around $60.00 (too much in my opinion, if you know where to look), and not nearly piratey enough. the corsets i found on ebay were for around a total of $20.00 for the corset, shipping & handling.
otherwise, i like to play mr. potato head with items....meaning i'll take a costume hat that is a great start, but has a cheap scarf on it, take the scarf off and throw that crap away, tear the hat up a bit at the edges to make it look more 'worn in'. then i'll add some vintage-looking jewelry and glue it on. yes, i sew, but recommend playing with the glue gun if you're pressed for time and don't quite want to commit to a certain look. look amongst your own things, first, and use your imagination...you'll be amazed how much stuff is already at your disposal! hope this has been helpful, and that i'll see you're new duds at the next get-together! kristen |

Good ideas Abound!
Renn Fairs and the ilk have nice pre made items but they hit the purse strings with a Vengence. If you are like me, a difficult size to shop for, costuming can be a challenge. I carouse Ebay and various online stores for accessories and corsets. However I've found that many clothing stores from Walmart to Fashion Bug offer Peaseant/poet blouses in a variety of colors as well as long cotton skirts which can be layered or used as petticoats. I often find good skirts and scarves in the swimwear/beachwear sections of walmart, target or kmart. Searching out good Pirate swag is alot of fun... like a treasure hunt. I've found tons of great jewelry and specialty items on Ebay and in various department stores. |
