Let us celebrate India's Independence day (August 15th) by watching this fabulous movie "Lagaan" at my house on the 17th. Vegetarian dinner and discussion to follow.

Here's more info on the movie--

"Lagaan" (means tax), is a bollywood feature film made in India. It became the third Hindi language film to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The movie is based on a true story set in the victorian period of the British Raj, and it revolves around the peasants from a barren village who are oppressed by high taxes imposed by the British. When the peasants attempt to persuade the officers to reduce the taxes, the officers offer to cancel the peasants' taxes for three years if their village team beats them at cricket. After accepting this proposition, the villagers face the arduous task of learning the game and playing for a result that will change their village's destiny.

"Would you believe the most enchanting musical of the year is long epic about a ragtag group of 19th-century Indian farmers who form a cricket team to take on an arrogant British captain? The old-fashioned Hollywood musical is alive and well in India's Bollywood industry, where the joyful explosion of music and dance and innocent romance abounds in sweeping epics. In this infectious tale of bloodless revolution, the underdog outcasts and oddballs of a fractured village pull together into a unified team to take on the oppressive colonial Brits at their own game. Think The Longest Yard meets The Seven Samurai by way of Rudyard Kipling, with cricket bats, choreographed dance numbers, romantic triangles, and a rousing call to solidarity. There are no surprises, but what spirit, what color, what good fun!" --Sean Axmaker

The movie might be long, but it is very entertaining and educational, and hence a perfect watch for this group. :) Hope you can make it.
