Anyone who has seen Night of the Creeps before will know that this is one of the greatest 80s horror movies in its own right, and just about still the best horror movie not on dvd. But not for long, it's finally out this Fall in a long overdue Special Edition, and to celebrate the Alamo is having a reunion showing of the movie with the new director's cut ending, and a cast and crew Q and A, which is being filmed for the dvd's documentary. I'm very excited by this but tickets will sell out fast so keep your eyes peeled on the Alamo website from early June onwards. Also, the showing is scheduled for 10pm, so i think we need to be there from at least 9pm to get seats together, but we can always have a chat and grab a beer in line. Links below

Hi guys, the new Pixar film is out and is supposedly their best yet, which is really saying something. I thought i'd leave the opening weekend to the rabid kids and let us go and see it at a more relaxed and adult midweek showing. I hope you can make it, apparently unless your an android it will make you cry at least twice, and laugh the rest of the time. I should think that if we aim for about 8.45pm to get there, we should be ok to sit together for a 9.40pm start. Links below

Hi guys, I'm the new organizer for the Alamo Drafthouse group. I've been a member for a while but haven't made any meets either because of scheduling or i just didn't fancy the meets. I'm also the organizer of the British Ex-Pat group which is still going strong. The good news is that i'm a huge movie buff and am down one of the Alamo Theatres at least once every two weeks( plus other theatres). This week for instance i've just seen Terminator Salvation, and am seeing Scarface tonight. I've got some great ideas for future meet-ups and hope i can get a chance to know all of you guys and for all of us to have a great time.

I'm a huge Sam Raimi fan, and have been waiting for his return to horror, Drag me to Hell for ages now. It's showing at the Alamo Ritz and is definitely going to sell out so anyone who wants to come needs to get their tickets asap. We'll meet at 6pm in the foyer and try to line up together so that we can all sit together. Hope to see you there and am really looking forward to it. See below for links for directions and the trailer

OK, don't worry if you haven't seen the first two ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA movies (although you certainly should), because III is the moment when the series started to become a series of stand-alone entries, although it holds up a hell of a lot better than most Part IIIs ever do.

In keeping with the series' tradition of placing Jet Li's Wong Fe Hung at the forefront of turn of the century Chinese history, this time out at the end of the Qing Dynasty, where China began to lose much of its sovereignty to foreign powers. But lest you think ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA III is nothing more than a history lesson, rest assured that the film features several outstanding martial arts sequences, including several with the ferocious Xin Xin Xong (from Hark's THE BLADE) as Club Foot, and some incredible Lion Dance competitions that make this one really stand out. The entire ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA series is often regarded as one of the highlights of the early 90's Golden Age of Hong Kong action cinema, and getting a part III as good as this one sure as hell proves it.

NOTE - This screening will be held in good-old fashioned 35mm. None of this fancy-schmancy digital stuff for this screening, so come see this martial arts classic in a beautiful 35mm film print with cuts and scratches. Film forever!

One of the biggest breakthrough realizations we had last year was the moment when we first thought that we don’t have to have a movie screening tied in with every single event we do. Tim and I were driving back from Houston (for the R. Kelly concert! What up!) and talking about how fun it would be to get a boat, have people dress up like pirates, and just throw a big dance ol’ dance party. We talked about trying to squeeze in a screening of PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN or something on the shore after the party, but as great as that movie is, it just felt like it would be anti-climactic. We decided to go for it, plotted out our first cinematic-and-yet-cinema-free event, and oh my god a good time was had by all (even if some of us couldn’t remember it).

I led the boat to Treasure Island for a gold coin scavenger hunt, we got attacked by a firework-shooting other boat, Tim made me walk the plank, and Car Stereo (Wars) kept us yo ho hoing on the dance floor all night with his pirated beats and mash ups. We quickly realized that we needed to relive that party again this year, but rather than just getting the same boat and doing a carbon copy of that party, we decided to take the pirating off of Lake Travis and bring it home to Lady Bird Lake. After all, there’s more to pillage in downtown Austin, right?

Car Stereo (Wars) will join us again, and there are sure to be more surprises, but you’ll have to come aboard our ship to find out about that. All I can tell you right now is that you HAVE to be dressed up as a pirate to board. You can buy a ticket and show up three hours early, waiting in eager anticipation for the greatest party of the summer, but if you aren’t dressed like a pirate you will NOT be coming aboard our ship, and we won’t be offering refunds, because we are PIRATES! Aaarrrrrrr!!! (Henri)

$50 Ticket Includes:
4 Hour Pirate Boat Ride on Lady Bird Lake
Free Specialty Pirate Drinks throughout the Cruise
Swashbuckling Adventures on the High Seas
Night Dance Party with Car Stereo (Wars)

Please buy your ticket(s) online as this event will definitely sell out.
Yes, you must dress like a pirate or they will not let you on the barge.

Hope to see you there.

There were many great films at Fantastic Fest 2008, but a true standout was the outrageously ambitious action/comedy/fantasy/horror/sci-fi meltdown DOCTOR INFIERNO. Made with an absolute intense dedication by a group of rabid creators with very limited means, the film manages to capture a boiling fervor that is practically unequaled in the annals of entertainment.

The plot: a demented gynecologist discovers a cure for all the world's illnesses and uses it as leverage to become sole dictator of the earth. Jam-packed with monsters, kung fu, battling robots and deviant sexual practices, DR. INFIERNO doesn't let anything get in the way of an explosive fountain of impossible ideas.

A schizophrenic, Nathaniel Ayers (Jamie Foxx), is a homeless musician from Skid Row, Los Angeles who dreams of playing at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. Through "chance," he meets a journalist, Steve Lopez (Robert Downey Jr.), who tries to help this mentally disturbed man get "back on his feet" and make his dreams come true. I've been wanting to see this one ever since the trailers started showing up.

The director of SUPERBAD teams up with THE SQUID & THE WHALE's Jesse Eisenberg and FREAKS AND GEEKS' Martin Starr?
Yes.

The setting is a carnival in 1987, being the apex of American culture before our downhill slide into technology-driven social retardation?
Double yes.

A smart, funny, taunting but heartfelt exploration of post-adolescent awkwardness, first love, self-loathing and unexpected triumph?
Triple quadruple yes with a big ol' side of yes.

Believe us, you'll want to see this one a few times. So why not make the sweet 2nd the screening with Star Martin Starr live in person!

As always, the special events like this always sell out.

The Alamo seems to be on a roll with live music events, and we're gonna roll with 'em.

( From the Alamo website ).

The Golden Hornet Project kicks off its 10th Anniversary Season the way they began a decade ago: with a concert by the wonderful Tosca String Quartet.

Begun as part of the Tosca Tango Orchestra, the quartet is an accomplished crossover string ensemble, having performed and/or recorded with David Byrne, The Dixie Chicks, Bob Schneider, Willie Nelson, Spoon, Vampire Weekend, Lambchop and many others.

For this concert Tosca will perform pieces by Paul D. Miller aka DJ Spooky, Peter Stopschinski, Josh Robins, and Graham Reynolds, along with the US premiere of a piece by Gabriel Prokofiev and world premieres by Emily Marks, Tina Marsh and Lauren Larson.

Augmenting the entire performance will be a video mix by Paul Baker on the big screen, collaging live camera footage of the quartet with pre-recorded elements.

Tickets are on sale for this one right now, so please get your tickets in advance.

Hope your schedule allows for this one.

See you there.
