"Van Damme is back! JCVD, a meta-movie parody par excellence, constitutes the headiest stretch of the beefy star's career since, well, ever. Playing "himself," Van Damme reveals heretofore hidden third dimension to his monosyllabic persona. Including a tonally opposite pair of longish takes -- one a wonderfully absurd ode to star's martial-arts moves, the other a tear- and prayer-filled Van Damme monologue that must be seen to be believed." - Variety

"That JCVD is able to show you a new face to its star and subject at all makes it a major accomplishment. That it does so with such an incredible sense of style, insight, and pure entertainment value makes it a revelation. Ladies and gentlemen, after spending decades turning out lowest-common-denominator action pictures Jean Claude Van Damme has just made a truly great film. No matter what criteria you may use to judge it - scripting, cinematography, humour, action, even dramatic performance - JCVD is one remarkable piece of work." - Todd Brown, Twitch Film

A reality-twisting cousin to BEING JOHN MALKOVICH -- showcases a Van Damme who's sly like a fox about his own image." - Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly

Short notice, but ... if your schedule allows for it ( and your head doesn't hurt too much ! ) please join us at the Ritz.

Actually start time for the show is 4:30 PM, but seating generally starts 45 minutes before
the start of the show. I'll wait in the lobby until they start to let us into the theater.

Hope to see you there.

OK, I'll admit it ... I'm a sucker for almost anything Will Smith does. Fresh Prince ? Love it.
The serious roles ? Ab-so-lutely.

Seven Names. Seven Strangers. One Secret. Seven Pounds."

This ambiguous tagline is about as much as we've seen so far about SEVEN POUNDS, the sophomore English-language outing from the Italian director Gabriele Muccino, who gave us last year's Will Smith sleeper smash THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS.

This much, we know: Will Smith plays Ben, a depressed IRS agent with intentions of suicide. Before he carries out the fatal act, however, he pursues a mission of changing the lives of seven strangers, during which he meets Rosario Dawson's character and a blind pianist, played by Woody Harelson.

After HAPPYNESS, this is all we need to know. Whatever the secret is, SEVEN POUNDS will be the one everyone's talking about.

In addition to Will Smith the film stars Rosario Dawson and Woody Harrelson. Italian director Gabriele Muccino impressed me with “Happyness” and I’m sure this will be quite the emotionally moving film as well (I’m a sucker for these things, although I generally don’t go out of my way to watch them).

If you don't see me in the lobby ( wearing red jeans ??? ) , then please ... by all means call the cell phone. Cell phone will be emailed to those that RSVP 'yes/maybe'.

I'll be waiting in the lobby until they allow us into the theater. One of the cool things that the Alamo does, is that they'll be showing clips/trailiers from Will's previous works before the movie. Another good reason to get there early !!!

Hope your schedule allows for it.

See you there.

From the Alamo South website:

"Bella (Kristen Stewart) has always been a little bit different. When her mother remarried and sent her to live with her father in the rainy little town of Forks, WA, she didn't expect much to be different. But things change when she meets the mysterious and dazzlingly beautiful Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson). He's nothing like anyone she's ever met...intelligent and witty, and he seems to see straight into her soul. In no time at all, they are swept up in a passionate and decidedly unorthodox romance — because Edward really isn't like the other boys. He can run faster than a mountain lion. He can stop a moving car with his bare hands. Oh, and he hasn't aged since 1918.

Based on the #1 New York Times Bestselling series by Stephenie Meyer, TWILIGHT has become a cultural phenomenon. Critically acclaimed director Hardwicke brings to life this modern, visual and visceral Romeo and Juliet story of the ultimate forbidden love affair — between vampire and mortal."

The Alamo said they will also be having a Vampire Ball at an undisclosed warehouse after the film. More info on the Vampire Ball as it becomes available.

I'll be there a bit early ( 6:45 PM ) as the Alamo generally opens the doors 45 minutes before showtime.I'll wait in the lobby until 7:00 PM, and then go inside to get a good seat.

If you have trouble locating us then please call the cell phone ( emailed to all 'yes' RSVPs. ).

Okay, this was shown at Fantastic Fest and I missed it. However, I got to meet one of the stars, as well as a camera man and writer. This is a Goth-rock opera and it looks amazing. Basically, if you need an organ donation, you can get financing through GeneCo. BUT, if you don't pay up...watch out!!! HA If that wasn't enough, it also stars Paris Hilton! LOL! How can you resist!?

This is the opening night and I this film already has a cult following, so I recommend you get your tickets in advance!

Get more info on the film and buy tickets online:

I will wait in the lobby for your lazy ass until about 6:45 or when they let us in the theater, whichever is later.

If you only know DEVO for 'Whip It' then you owe it to yourself to discover more about this great band. Event time is a little late for a school nite, but ... worth the effort IMHO. I've posted the event start at 9:30 PM, but the actual show starts at 10 PM.

( from the Alamo Drafthouse Website )

FACT: Devo were the best band in the world. This incredible collection, released before their ‘80s “Whip It” phase acted as supporting evidence for the group’s de-evolution theory, is undeniable proof. No other band -- new wave, rock or otherwise – has ever burst forth so fully armed with revolutionary new sounds, images and ideas. If you’re still skeptical that Devo were the greatest innovators in music history, tonight will leave those doubts in the dust. The boys formed as a school project in 1973, beating both the punk and new wave movements by a long stretch and choosing to document their avalanche of creativity via music, film and even bizarre printed pamphlets on mankind’s evolutionary regression. The footage in tonight’s show (little of which is available on DVD) captures Devo at the absolute tip of their violently creative apex, where each music video and short film explodes with bizarre snapshots borne of future fantasies, nerdish sexual denial and unfiltered, unhinged brilliance. At the end of the program, you’ll have no choice but to stand up and declare: “We ARE Devo!!!”

Tickets to be made available about a week before the day of the event.

If you're interested in learning more about what Mark Mothersbaugh has been up to since the glory days of DEVO check out 'mutato.com'.

CANCELLED: The Rocker.

The Alamo had originally posted 08/20 as the showday for the film, but they have since pulled
the showday/showtime for the film.

Apologies if this update upsets your plans for Wednesday nite.

I'll let you know when the Alamo decides to post a day/time for the film.

Thanks,

Oh boy !, I love Ben Stiller, and this one looks to be as outrageous as anything he's ever done.

Ben Stiller is back in the directors' chair after Blue Steel-ing our hearts (sorry) in 2001's now-immortal ZOOLANDER. In this colossal clash of A-list titans, Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr. are three actors making the "most expensive war movie of all time." But after a military consultant played by a particularly sinister Nick Nolte suggests they put these primadonnas in the shit, they wind up amidst real jungle warfare...except they think it's all just movie magic.

Like ZOOLANDER, expect more cameos than the Oscars- Tom Cruise, Matthew McConaughey, Tobey Maguire, Bill Hader, Justin Theroux, Mickey Rooney and FOOT FIST WAY's Danny McBride just to name a few.

Oh, and did we mention that Robert Downey Jr. plays an Australian method actor who surgically darkens his skin to play the platoon's Sergeant?

Yeah, see it.

*** Cindy will be the host/greeter for this event, so ... please look for her in the lobby ***.

Enjoy !!!

ABBA Sing-along

( From the Alamo website )

With the upcoming release of MAMMA MIA! as a feature film, we realized it was high time we brought back our ABBA Sing-Along for a reprise show or two. Built around the idea of interviewing people like the reporter does in ABBA: THE MOVIE, this show features filmed interviews with Austinites about their favorite ABBA moments as well as every single ABBA song you could ever hope for, with footage culled from movies, concerts and music videos to bring you into a state of orgiastic ecstasy at these two married couples who wrote a lot of million dollar pop songs about breaking up, then decided to get divorces.

Come prepared to be singing/dancin in your seat ? or in the aisle!!!

If the event fits your schedule ? please buy your tickets as soon as you can .. as these events do sell out.

Ticket price is $12 plus the cost of your food/drinks.

I'll email the 'yes' attendees with my cell phone number the day before the show.

FYI: The Alamo doesn't let us save seats, so please show up a bit early if you can.

Hope to see you there.

I may dress in a bit of garb for this. If anyone is daring enough or has a corset let me know and I'll dress up a bit. :)

"Inconceivable!"

From the website

We've been doing Quote-Alongs for over a year now, but haven't brought THE PRINCESS BRIDE QUOTE-ALONG to the Ritz yet. We figure it's high time to fix that. Once again, we'll start with a "battle for the princess" where contestants from the crowd will come up on stage to sword fight like Inigo, rhyme like Fezzik, and engage their wits like Vizzini. Then we'll move on to the feature film, with subtitles for key lines, props, and more.

Plus! For one night only, we're having a special PRINCESS BRIDE Mini-Feast. We'll be doing everything we do at all the Quote-Along shows, but for this one we'll enjoy a medieval fantasy feast menu featuring drink pairings with each course!

...we're going to turn the movie into more of a party, with specific lines that we'll all yell out at the same time that they're happening on the screen, live sword fighting in the theater, iocane-laced wine on special, and free admission for all six-fingered men!

Note: The free admission for six-fingered men may be a trap. We recently hired a Spaniard to work in our kitchen, and he suggested this promotion and also told us that if anyone took us up on the offer we should notify him immediately so that he could tell him something about his father. It sounds a little bit fishy to us, but he's a really good cook. "

To start the fun early, I entered 3 Princess Bride trivia questions. If you don't fell like playing along, just type anything to bypass it. See you all there.
