City of Borders won many awards.

Poignant and moving, City of Borders explores the rifts that continue to separate our community and world from peace and coexistence. Filmed in Jerusalem and Ramallah, the documentary investigates the lives of the gay and lesbian community as they grapple with acceptance and learn how to put their fight for respect and equality above the differences that have been separating them for centuries.
Located in the heart of Jerusalem lies the city's only gay bar, Shushan, an underground sanctuary for the much-maligned GLBT community in the city and surrounding areas. The film follows the owner of the bar (the first openly gay city councilman in Jerusalem), and four of his regular patrons: a Palestinian who sneaks through the wall separating the territories to escape his oppressive life in Ramallah; a young Israeli settler who is building a home with his partner; and a lesbian couple—one Israeli and one Palestinian—who struggle with their differences to build a stronger relationship.
Constantly under threat from powerful conservative Jews, Muslims, and Christians, Shushan brings together and gives voice to a community no longer willing to remain silent. City of Borders gracefully shows the daily struggle for equality that continues around the globe.

Also showing is Shunned (Igal Hecht, Canada/Israel, 2009): In Israel, where it’s not easy being gay or Arab, how do you navigate your life when you’re both? Shunned looks at the day-to-day lives of four homosexual Arabs living across Israel. Honest and straightforward, this film explores the questions that are raised when you are an outsider in your land and your religion.
A university student in Jerusalem lives openly, but far away from his oblivious family. Living openly with his family in Jaffa, a teenager struggles with balancing his sexuality and his heritage. A political activist discusses the rigid social codes that govern the country. And, in Haifa, the leader of a GLBT group fights the notion that homosexuality is a just another immoral trend from the West.
Each of the stories provides a look at the challenges unique to gay Palestinians. Already a minority within a minority, they look for a way to be proud of who they are when everyone surrounding them says they shouldn't be. The Israelis don't like that they're Palestinian, and their families don't like that they're gay, but each of these people are able to find some comfort in the fact that their actions are going to make life easier for future generations.

—Benjamin Kelner (City of Borders)
—Zachary Togami (Shunned) An award-winning feature-length documentary by Yun Suh.

About the film
Barbara Marten gives a bravura performance that tugs at the heartstrings in this drama co-starring Andrina Carroll and Andrew Dunn. Marten plays Ellen, a working-class mother in Northern England who struggles mightily with her feelings for another woman (Carroll) -- who happens to be her 10-year-old son's (Dunn) exuberant teacher. A fine smoldering portrait of repressed sexuality and the courage it takes to "come out of the closet."

This is an amazing, poetic and beautiful film by acclaimed Gay British filmmaker Terence Davies. It merges memoir and city symphony in this valedictory visit to the vanishing Liverpool where he grew up gay, poor, Catholic, and movie-mad. The social history of postwar Britain forms the backdrop to this luminous tapestry woven from archival footage, poetry pop-songs, and Davies' own resonantly sardonic/sepulchral voice.

Here's the Reader review:
Terence Davies, England's greatest living filmmaker, has released only six features, and this one is his first documentary, a mesmerizing and eloquent essay about his native Liverpool. As autobiographical and intensely personal as Distant Voices, Still Lives (1988) and The Long Day Closes (1992), it encompasses his working-class background, his loss of faith in Catholicism (and, more generally, religion), and his evolution as a homosexual, as well as his taste in music and cinema. The film is made up chiefly of found footage and therefore lacks the mise en scene of its predecessors, but it has the added benefit of Davies's voice-over narration, which, thanks to his training and experience as an actor, is enormously powerful. (Check out the witty way he conveys his disdain for the Beatles through his delivery of one of their best-known refrains.) 72 min. -- Jonathan Rosenbaum

Jia Zhang-ke has been called “the most important filmmaker in the world” (Stuart Klawans, The Nation). Like all Jia’s films, including PLATFORM, THE WORLD, and STILL LIFE, 24 CITY is about the massive upheavals sweeping contemporary China. The setting is Chengdu, a city in Southwest China where a venerable munitions factory is closing its doors to make way for a luxury high-rise complex known as 24 City. Jia interviews a cross-section of citizens caught in the crosshairs of change; his controversial twist is that some of the “real people” are composites portrayed by professional actors, including Joan Chen as a frustrated actress and Zhao Tao (star of THE WORLD and STILL LIFE) as a paid shopper for wealthy women. Jamie and Erin's activist theater company sets out to create a play based on PJ's book of political short stories. PJ hasn't written much in a while... or socialized much either, except for hanging out at Olson's vegan cafe. Erin's girlfriend Bel, having just moved from New York, prepares for a conference and searches for an apartment, as well as community, in Chicago. Meanwhile, Billy is void of direction even with the self-fulfillment classes, but his partner Sally hopes his new job at Olson's cafe will help. Olson's partner Annette is writing a new quantum physics book and feeling uninspired... as are her students.

FAQ about MASS ROMANTIC
What is this movie about?
-MASS ROMANTIC follows activists and academics struggling to find love while creating political art.

Yeah, ok, but what happens?
-It’s a talky ensemble movie, the characters deal with new relationships, old relationships, new projects and old insecurities. They rehearse a play, dance, play music, talk & kiss. So if you are looking for explosions, car chases, mob conspiracies and secretive people smoking in trench coats, this isn’t it.

Wait, is this a gay movie?
-Yes, two of the four main relationships involve queer characters (Bel and her girlfriend Erin and Annette and her partner Olson, who is F2M). Also, there are other queer characters and queer subject matter throughout.

If you see a lot of gay movies, you will probably notice this one is a little different from most. This isn’t a coming out movie or a triumphing over/succumbing to homophobia movie. MASS ROMANTIC celebrates the everyday lives of queer people and their allies, and acknowledges the importance of allies in building meaningful, enriching communities. In doing this, MASS ROMANTIC focuses on the character’s relationships, while touching on queer politics and transphobia. It also touches on other controversial topics such as healthcare, abortion, food activism and corporate control of media.

So, yes, it’s a queer movie. It’s also an activist movie and a relationship movie.

Who made this film?
-We did! After years of development, the director self-financed MASS ROMANTIC and we shot it in the sweltering Chicago heat of late summer in just 11 days featuring 40 actors in over 10 locations, producing 33 hours of footage. The theme of coalition-building present in MASS ROMANTIC is reflected by the diverse group of individuals involved in the making of the film, many of whom are underrepresented in American cinema and identify as women, LGBTQ, people of color, non-native speakers and/or activists. Plus, the film features 13 independent bands, including live performances by Carrie Lydon, Kate Brown, ROFO and members of Head of Femur. A full list of the crew is available at www.mudgeonsoul.org.

How much of the film is improvised?
-A couple scenes were completely scripted and a couple scenes were completely improvised, but most scenes were partly scripted and partly improvised based on a detailed skeleton script, workshopping and rehearsals.

A film series showcasing the best of gay cinema chosen and hosted by gay film critics.
The Killing of Sister George
Hosted by Charlie Shoquist, Film Critic, Gay Chicago

For its time, The Killing of Sister George was a groundbreaking film - and one of the first films in history to be released with an 'X' rating in the United States.

George lives with her lover, Childie and plays a cheerful district nurse in a BBC soap opera. However, her character is to be killed off, and George realises that the only other job she can get is the voice of a cow in a children's tv programme. Her life begins to fall apart as Childie has an affair with a predatory tv producer. Written by Paul Baker {bakerjp@unix.lancs.ac.uk}

"Sister George" is a BBC soap opera character who is "killed off" due to low ratings. The aging actress who portrays Sister George is a lesbian living with a childish middle-aged woman named Childie, who works in a factory when not playing with her doll collection. Conflict arises between the two lovers when the hard-nosed BBC female program director, who told George of her canceled part, also steals Childie away. As consolation for losing both her job and her lover, George is offered the voice part of a puppet cow in a new animated cartoon series. Written by alfiehitchie

Verdict
A universe away from everyday American teen movies, this engaging and empathetic portrait of teenage life is packed full of stylish moments.
The lives and desires of three 15-year-old Parisian girls are intertwined in this French drama about sexual and emotional awakening, set in and around a local swimming pool

The story is set during summer, and based around a municipal swimming pool in the Paris suburb of Cergy, where the local synchronised swimming team is in training for the next regional competition. Watching the training sessions is Marie (Acquart), a quiet and reserved girl who's soon asking if she can help out with the team. Her interest has less to do with her liking the sport and more about being closer to Florianne (Haenel), a gorgeous blonde swimmer disliked by most of the girls on the team, but who knows how to use her looks on boys.
As the story progresses, the relationships between the three girls go through various shifts and changes, and writer-director Sciamma nails the intensity and casual cruelty of teenage life.

One of the cleverest devices she uses is to give the film an almost timeless edge - there are no mobile phones and no references to pop culture, and Sciamma creates a claustrophobic atmosphere by ensuring that this is a world almost entirely without grown-ups.

Each of the young actresses does a fantastic job in creating their character, but it's Acquart as Marie who has the hardest job. Bearing a strong resemblance to a teenage Scarlett Johansson, Acquart has to express almost all of her desire for Florianne through looks and behaviour rather than dialogue, leading to sequences such as the one at a disco, where her desire to finally kiss Florianne is so brilliantly portrayed it's almost painful to watch.

Warm, wise and achingly sexy, it's an impressively crafted debut, and Sciamma has singled herself out as a filmmaker who'll be worth keeping an eye on.
