I'm not sure how many people didn't already know this, but Celebration Cinemas runs a discount Tuesday program where all tickets to select shows are $3.50. I think it's a great chance to go see films that either you might not otherwise have, or that you thought you might wait for the DVD. So check out the list every week to see if there are any films that we might go to as a group. Of the ones now running, 21 is the only one I really want to see, but I'd be open to just about any of them.
I'd also like to gauge everyone's interest in art house/indie type films. We've already passed the East Lansing Film Festival this year, but they sponsor showings throughout the year on occasion and there are some other venues not terribly far away. The theaters in town will also have limited run movies at times. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the subject. Later, Zach |

i didn't know it was just $3.50...unfortunately my 2nd shift job gets in the way sometimes...
i definitely would like to catch some indie fare at some point...if anyone has some ideas on that score...they might want to post an item on the calendar as a note... Also, we need organizers...any takers? (We have room for 20...so feel free) ciao, mark |

I would love some indie movies too, I just didn't know they were an option in Lansing. :)

What we might need is a "Wish List" of Indie films and then perhaps check out Netflix or some other rental place and set-up a meetup at a house or even Gone Wired's room. The issue is space at some of our houses, so it would have to be first come, first served...or we can just get all comfy together on the floor, walls...
I know there were a lot of cool sounding films shown at the EL's film festival, but I didn't have time to get away...and fighting the crowds and then there's parking....if we can find sources for these films then I think we can do this. Sign me up Mark, I'll help, I had wanted to do a "B Movie" meetup and this will work just fine. ::Bruce |

I have two possible candidates (both of which I own on DVD): 1) Thirty-Two Short Films About Glen Gould 2) The Devil and Daniel Johnston Both are documentaries about musicians, but each is done in a unique style. If you've never heard of either of these guys, it's an awesome introduction into some truly intriguing people. Glen Gould was a Canadian pianist, among other things, and was most famous for his interpretations of Bach. Daniel Johnston is a fringe artist with a disturbing yet touching life-story. |

Interesting. I had no idea that there was a documentary about Gould. I assume the "Thirty-Two short films" part of the title refers to the 32 movements of Bach's Goldberg variations, which he recorded famously (twice!).
As far as musician documentaries, I'd love to see Joe Strummer: The Future is Unwritten which was released last year. If you don't know who Joe Strummer was, look here, here, here or even here. As far as a B-Movie night, how about some MST3K films? The Manos: The Hands of Fate episode I know is available as a stand-alone. It is perhaps the worst film of all time, and I was reminded of it by a certain recent news story out of Texas. Yes, it is worse than Plan 9. I'd also really, really, really like to see Incubus some day - it does have Shatner. And Esperanto. There are several indie short films available online that I've seen that are pretty good. I'll give some feature films some though. Do we want to go for current films, or classics? Zach |

You got it, Zach!
All of your suggestions sound great. I've never heard of Joe Strummer before...but after looking at the links I finally know where that "I fought the Law" song came from, lol. I haven't seen any Mystery Science since high school, so almost all of them would be new to me, so I'd go with whichever ones you would recommend. Feature films...how about some classics first? I need some indie education! ![]() |
