Film Festival Alternative suggested by Sue Long who really fancies this one, I can't make it though so Sue will be organising it if she gets a few takers
Received to howls of laughter at its Cannes screening this year, this is a fresh and hilarious look at the life of a family of losers who still live at home with their mum, get drunk and do ridiculous things. This colourful portrayal of ‘misfortunate’ lives surprises in its divergence from more common cinematic subject matter. Thoroughly entertaining, with underlying seriousness made all the more poignant because of its slapstick, this fabulous Belgian film finds a new way of reaching your heart – through splitting your sides! Great fun
Could be tremendous, must be worth the risk surely. And don't call me Shirley.
“ A really watchable 'real' film, in turns, hilarious/tragic and downright weird!
The patronage of the drinking establishment afterwards,
left the feeling that we had jumped into the film ourselves! ”
“ Great to see Julie, Tracey, Gary, Naomi and Leanne.
The film content was totally unexpected, however it was thoroughly entertaining and both hilarious and poignant at the same time.
It tells the story of 4 drunken brothers who spend their time drinking, eating raw sausage (thats what it looked like!) and singing the most lewd and sexist of songs. The 13 year old boy, the son of one of the brothers, would appear to be following the same fate until the film shows clips of his adult life running simultaneously. A great line from a review is this...'they make the Beverly Hillbillies look well-adjusted'.
I suppose the the film is all about family and pride, but some parts made me cringe, such as 13 year old Gunther wiping vomit from his unconcious father's face in the morning, one of the brothers unzipping himself and weeing on the floor so as not to disturb his drinking session and a real baby rolling over and almost falling off the table!!
Think we all needed that drink afterwards ”
“ Was expecting a comedy so the juxtaposition of so much sadness alongside the "humour" was a little uncomfortable at times but it was well made and entertaining. Would definitely recommend ”
