For two nights only the Hyde Park Picture House is showing the Christmas classic, 'It's a Wonderful Life'. If you haven't seen it before, details are below. If you have, then when and where better to watch it again! As Empire magazine says, "Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without it."

Facing financial ruin, George Bailey (James Stewart) stands alone on a bridge on Christmas Eve 1946, contemplating suicide. He's visited by his guardian angel who shows him what a difference he's made to those around him and what his community would be like without him...

Frank Capra's darkly bittersweet festive fairytale was nominated for five Oscars and has been recognised by the American Film Institute as the most inspirational American film of all time.

LAW ABIDING CITIZEN
Release date: 27 November 2009
Running time: 109 mins
Director: F Gary Gray
Starring: Gerard Butler, Jamie Foxx

Long synopsis: A family man turns brutal assassin when his wife and child's killer gets away with murder.

Clyde Shelton (Gerard Butler) thinks he's going to get justice when the men accused of murdering his family are brought to trial. But he wasn't counting on the actions of prosecutor Nick Rice (Jamie Foxx), who offers one of the suspects a lighter sentence if he agrees to testify against his accomplice. Ten years later, one of the murderers is found dead and Shelton comes forward to admit his guilt. But this is only the beginning. He warns Rice that, unless he fixes the flawed justice system, he's going to kill every person involved in the case one by one. It doesn't take long for Shelton to make good on his promise as key players are found killed in increasingly gruesome circumstances. Now Rice must find a way to stop the deadly assassin and end his reign of terror.

Screenplay: Kurt Wimmer

Distributor: Momentum

You should see it because: Butler makes a suitably menacing adversary in this tense and morally ambiguous thriller.

See it if you liked: Red Eye (2005), 12 Rounds (2009), The Taking Of Pelham 123 (2009)

Laurie writes

This is the precis from the Empireonline website.

"Jenny (Mulligan) is attractive, doing well at school and set to land a place at Oxford. Then she meets David (Sarsgaard), an older man. He dazzles her with the edgy world beyond her ’60s suburban life, and soon a very different destiny opens up before her..."

The screenplay is by the author Nick Hornby ('About a Boy', 'Fever Pitch', 'High Fidelity' etc) and the lead actress, Carey Mulligan, has been getting rave reviews.

NB Thursday afternoon for this one. Film Festival choice #5 of 6. This looks good, full details here http://www.leedsfilm.com/films.aspx?id=1119. This deliciously subversive French film reinvents what may be the first ever serial killer story. Two kids in an attic read a scary story, and it unfolds on screen. The 18th century tale is about young Marie-Catherine, who is offered as a bride to local squire Bluebeard. But all his previous wives have disappeared without trace. Interesting, could be good I feel.
