4 of us for this film, Richard, Dee and me, Pete was there too, he missed us on the way in! We all enjoyed this one though! This is of course the sequel to the 3 week old Mesrine Killer Instinct and it more or less carried on chronologically from the ending of the first film. The 1st film was rather frantic but very entertaining but didn't really explore the Jacques Mesrine character too deeply, this was the opportunity to portray the man behind the legend, and Vincent Cassell has done a fine job, showing the right amount of charisma and menace. Quite a bit of derring-do, bank robberies and bungled getaways and prison escapes built up the audience's cameraderie with Mesrine, but some nasty stuff thrown in, reminded us that he had a very nasty streak indeed, for example the way he treated a reporter who deigned to disrespect him in the French papers. There were two interesting relationships in the film, between Mesrine and his girlfriend (Ludvine Sagnier, good support) and his partner in crime Besse, played by Mathieu Amalric. In wasn;t a perfect film, a little slow at times, but Cassell has won one best actor award (a Cesar) and it surely won't be the only one. The director in the meantime Jean-Francois Richet is really superb, he's absolutely nailed it, and I loved the 1970s sets, perfectly reproduced classic cars and a fine attention to detail. The best section in the whole of the two films might well be the sequence right at the end of part 2, when Mesrine and his girlfriend left their flat, and the tension built as the cops were staking it out in their various hiding places. Great cinema.

Frankie: Susan and I were there also (we got there about 5.30) and also didn't see you guys. Sorry we didn't get to meet up! We couldn't go to the pub after so couldn't even discuss it later.

Anyway, we really liked it - it was a bit long but really refreshing. Totally French: when he wasn't shooting anyone, Mesrine was cooking, smoking or drinking. I liked the way that people in the cinema were laughing at the somewhat implausible plot developments!
